AT&T Universal Rewards Card is issued by Citibank. Sometime last year, I zeroed-out the balance. This year, I got a statement in the mail.

A statement? for a Zero-balance. Of course, I opened it, and there was a charge on it for over $1000. Immediately, I thought fraud.

After investigating, however, I found out that my wife used the card. But I don't have my wife on the account.

Citibank issued a second card in her name, without my request or permission. When the card came in the mail addressed to her, she assumed that it was hers to use. When I brought up the matter she realized she had made a mistake charging that card, which she thought was one of hers.

This is a very deceptive practice, and one which allows Citibank to increase it's coffers by getting interest and fees which it would otherwise not have received.

I called Citicards to investigate further. How did the new card come? Who asked for it? Why was it issued without my authorization?

I asked to speak with a manager. The representative told me that one wasn't available to speak with. I asked to see proof of authorization. The representative told me that she would speak with the manager to try to get me proof via postal mail, but it would take a few weeks to arrive.

It's been two months, and no proof has arrived.

I wish the government would crack down hard on these kinds of practices. Now it becomes my responsibility to hunt and track down why this happened, and there may be no real answer.

The responsibility should be on the company, not consumers.

I agree. Zero balance. You do not expect a bill. Seriously? Citibank knows your wife and added her?

UPDATE TO Citicards report

There was a rebuttal posted by Dman of Jacksonville, FL, stating that "What most likely happened is the account was an inactive open account with you wife as an authorized user on it. Replacement cards were sent out because it was close to expiration date, and your wife used the card." Thank you Dman for the explanation HOWEVER that does not explain how or why my wife was added. As I have already written, I never had my wife on the account. And if I am mistaken, then where is the proof that I asked for. Obviously Citibank chooses to engage in these deceptive practices, but cannot explain itself even when given the opportunity to do so.

Hi Kmandel. I read your comment, I do apologize about the confusion. From reading your comment, it doesn't appear anything fraudulent happened with your account. What most likely happened is the account was an inactive open account with you wife as an authorized user on it. Replacement cards were sent out because it was close to expiration date, and your wife used the card. Lots of customers assume that if they don't use an account for a long time, it will automatically close or they simply forgotten about it. Only other scenario that I doubt is the case from what you wrote, is that your wife added herself to your account as an authorized user, which does happen more times than not. If you have any other questions, please let me know
