They claim it takes 12 days by mail to receive a payment when mailed two states away and also claim they do not receive payments by the due date when paid over the internet. They benefit by charging late fees. They are dishonest.

Credit card companies LOVE late fees...they make untold billions off of these and other creative fees that they tack on. Based upon what you wrote I'd cancel the account right now and pay it off....If that's not practical and you don't have the money to pay it all over...send all payments in the future via Registered Mail with return receipt...this will cost $3 each time...but it will make it impossible for them to charge $39 (or whatever they gouge) with late fees as you'd have documented proof of receipt of payment. If they still tried to attach late fees in spite of receiving a return receipt from Registered Mail...you could file a formal complaint with your state Post Master General.
