Ever since City took over AT&T Universal Card, it has been a disaster in terms of customer service and support. Recently, I made a payment in full for the balance owed. I made the payment on time, except due to my own fault, I set it up to pay with a bank account that I closed several months ago. There were actually two bank accounts set up for payment, but I selected the wrong one.

I called immediately to pay with the right account. Customer Rep said "can't change it!" so the payment was returned. Since I was now LATE, they charged a $35 late fee. Since the payment was returned, they ALSO charged a $35 returned payment penalty. BUT THAT'S NOT ALL! They jacked the interest rate from 12% to 29.99% and then it just got worse! Since I make all my payments through the internet, they LOCKED MY ACCOUNT so I couldn't make any more payments for another 30 days. They wouldn't take a check by phone either! So now I get another $35 LATE FEE. Plus 30% interest!

As soon as I was able, I paid the original outstanding balance in full, plus paid ONE LATE FEE. I then closed my account. Citi is now after me for $135 in LATE FEES, RETURNED CHECK FEES and INTEREST. I have a ZERO balance otherwise. When I WROTE to them, they wrote back and said the RETURNED CHECK FEE "Could not be removed". That's ALL it said. Nothing about any of my other complaints! So they are now standing on the principle that all the money is owed because I wouldn't pay the returned check charge!

After 4 phone calls in addition to my letter, I get the same response "I'm sorry, there's nothing we will do!" Interesting, since everytime the phrase is "WILL NOT DO". not "WE ARE LEGALLY OBLIGATED TO DO NOTHING"

Well, Citi, after 15 years of being an AT&T cardholder with 3 active accounts, charging an average of $1000 per month, you just lost this customer for good. Almost every month I paid balances in full, or at least the minimum on time. But now, I am too big of a risk for you, so ADIOS!
