Our vacation to Canun Mexico was cancelled due to Hurricane Emily. We were told to stay in Chicago in case the flights were cleared to leave. We finally went home the next day. We felt secure since we had purchased the travel insurance.

Apple Vacations told us to file a claim with the insurance for our expenses incurred when our flight was delayed. After reviewing the pamphlet, Total Vacation Security Plan by AVOK, we came to the conclusion we had rightful reimbursment. Our travel agent told us that the insurance would not reimburse us because the flight did not commence. What? There was a Hurricane! We asked exactly what this "insurance" was for if not to protect our travel investment? That's really when we got the run around. Be very careful when spending the money to purchase this "protection plan."

Pre-Departure Trip Cancellation Coverage and Travel Delay Coverage

#2UPDATE EX-employee responds

Wed, August 15, 2007

If you never started your Trip (i.e. you never got a boarding pass and checked in for the first flight of your Trip) then the only coverage you would have in effect is Pre-Departure Trip Cancellation coverage. If you are wanting to file a claim for the cancellation for your Trip under the AVOK for Apple Vacations, then you're blaming the wrong company. Trip Mate does not even handle Trip Cancellation claims for the AVOK plan. Trip Mate does handle Travel Delay claims. If you were wanting to be reimbursed for hotel & meal expenses you incurred from staying at the Chicago airport, then that would fall under Travel Delay - which only goes in effect if you actually start your Trip (board the first flight of your Trip). I know it sounds unethical and inhumane, but it's legal and legitimate according to the plan that you agreed to abide by when you purchased it. This is coming from an ex-employee who left on "angry" terms with Trip Mate.
