Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
I went in to a branch office of Bank of America to cash an $80.00 check written out to me. I was told that because I did not have an account there that I would be charged $5.00 to cash the check. I am aware that other banks are doing this also, but PLEASE GIVE ME A BREAK. Talk about DOUBLE-DIPPING. I took the check back. When will we stop allowing Banks to get away with this? Personally I will not do any business with B of A any more. Customers of mine who bank there will be asked to pay in cash. I do have some ideas for Bank of America since they are looking for ways to be GREEDY:

1. Why not just charge a cover-charge to everyone that enters the bank?

2. Maybe a Pawn Shop in the lobby?

3. How about even higher wages for Presidents and CEO's who are paid hundreds (and even thousands) of times as much as their employees?

4. Prostitution?

Corporate Mentality

The corporate mentality of these companies. I can just see all the higher ups sitting around figuring out new ways to charge people for things they use to do for free. They "give" free checking and charge for 10 different services that are associated with the "free" checking. There was that bank that charged $2 or $3 to conduct a transaction with a teller versus using the TV teller. Studies proved when you deal with a teller face to face, the transaction took longer. When I deal with a TV teller, they come on, say hello, and say, it'll be right out in what 5 seconds or less. And then they wonder why we change banks because of shitty impersonal service.

I totally understand. The Bank is being payed by the account holder to conduct transactions on his behalf. To charge for cashing his check (especially at their location) is definitely double-charging, and just another way to nickel-and-dime the public to death. It's not enough that they charge outrageous amounts in interest, and pay very little in the same. If you work for the BofA and stick up for them, then you REALLY just don't get it. As long as there are people who don't question such practices then there will be corporations that take advantage of them!

People in business look at things in a different manner than others. Normally, I take checks from customers all day long and deposit them in my business account as all businesses do. I seldom, if ever try and cash a check or try and get a cashier's check made out to my company aganist those funds. The reason I do so is to make sure those funds are "good" hence I won't get a hot check. bank one will not only not tell me if a check is "good" they refuse to issue a cashier's check. Every other bank I do business with does so. Personally, I don't mind paying a few dollars to get a check cashed, but that's me. Others have drawn the line and refused. That's their right. If a bank wants to nickel and dime its' customers and non-customers to death, that's their right too. But don't b***h about it.

Cory, I just wanted to let you know that you better NOT take ANY checks from any Major Bank in this country, because unless the bank is say only in your town/state, they more often than not will charge you for cashing it, if you don't have an account with them. The bank I work for has been charging for over 5 YEARS, and will continue to do so for a long time. And we are going to raise our fee in the first couple of months of '05. And we will STILL have the LOWEST fee in town. Have a pleasent New Year. And before any one asks "I am very PROUD to work for this bank"

The person holding the check is also the bank's customer.

When someone writes out a check, the bank has to pay the person that it is payable to. It's a fundamental concept: a check is functionally equivalent to the same amount of cash. This concept is what made the whole business of consumer banking viable. Without it, everyone would insist on dealing in cash. On the check, it says "Pay to the Order Of ____". If it's your name in the blank, you have EVERY RIGHT to walk into the bank and order them to pay it in CASH. Every dime of it. The check is supposed to be equivalent to the same amount of cash. Otherwise people will become like Cory and say that checks from that bank are not worth having. Banks do this because the customers who walk up to the counter needing cash typically have little other option. They either don't have an account at another bank, or they need the money right away and can't wait for their bank to release the ubiquitous "hold" on it. Their only other option may be a "check cashing store" which costs a lot more. So the banks decide to screw them, because they can.

Double dipping? Free Service for non-customers.

Just why in the world would you expect free service from any business where you are not a regular customer? Some banks will not even cash a check unless you are a customer. You sound like a business person - how much business do you do for free? Hey gang, lets go to Carlrip, he won't charge us anything for any service he provides because he thinks it is wrong!! Just read his report.

One Solution - Don't accept BOA checks or bank one checks

#8Consumer Suggestion

Sat, December 11, 2004

For the first time in history, electronic transactions(ATM,debit) outnumbered checks last year. Do you think this is by chance? Hell no. Whether a bank runs 100 or 1000 transactions through their equipment, the cost is appox the same. The banks are trying to do everything possible to eliminate the writing of checks. Putting a $5 fee on a person trying to cash a check IS a ripoff. I hate bank one for a number of reasons. When they tried to charge that other guy $3 to cash his checks, he made such a stink that they dropped it. I tell my customers I don't accept bank one checks and when they ask me why I tell them. If enough of US do so, the bank's customer will complain to the banks and they will stop this crap. Don't accept BOA checks or bank one checks, they'll get the message.
