Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
that I had been scammed by an unscrupulus salesman I would have never bought a used vehicle from this local dealer. Ronnie told me that if I had problems with a payment I could make alternative payment arrangements.

I made several attempt to call the finance department and had no acknowledgement of my voice mails until they decided to reposess my vehicle. BUYER BEWARE OF BARRETT MOTORS IN ROWLETT and GARLAND TEXAS!!!!!!!!!!!

We faced a tough economic crunch due to the excessive rain received in Texas. As a general contractor, there were more than 20 days we were unable to work and didnt have any income. We contacted Ms Farley at Barrett and requested that they please work with us anyway they could. There were no return calls from her.

We owed Barrett a mesealy $600 for 3 payments. Our terminally ill child had a severe attack that night and we were unable to contact anyone for information on how to retrieve our vehicle. As a result our son has been hospitalized for over 2 weeks now, driving us further into financial oblivion.

The next day we brought the entire amont due to the dealership by foot. They refused our payment and now we dont know what to expect. At that time, Ms Farley recited the previous payment arrangment requests that were documented in their system.

Even our mortgage company communicated and worked with us to resolution during this time. Unfortunately that was not reflected on our credit report, yet Mr David Barrett would not take the time to listen and understand our situation or consider any options. That is all we requested from Barrett.

I am happy to report that we have obtained a much greater quality vehicle for less than Barrett gouged us for! Their cars are highly overpriced and are of VERY POOR QUALITY! There were many hidden problems in our vehicle. The good news is, they are more than happy to finance any repairs into your loan should you need service. What a scam!

BEWARE OF the two salesman out front! They are a tag team scam! They claim they will work with you if you hit a rough spot when in fact that is obviously not company policy!

I am happy to say that within 3 weeks we have become current on all of our obligations to our debtors.

DONT BUY FROM BARRETT MOTORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You're totally lying about not having a David Barrett that works there or has worked there. I purchased a car from Barrett Motors in December of 2013 and know for a fact that David Barrett is one of the people that I spoke with during my unfortunate dealings with your company.

I too had a situation occur after buying a car from your company and you guys didn't want to work with me either to prevent repossession and I was only a month behind on my payments (they were biweekly payments). Sadly, I woke up one morning and my car was gone because of the lack of compassion your company has for people that truly are in difficult situations.

I would think that your company would have be more willing to work with me since I was so willing to work with them when, 2 days after I got my car it stopped without warning while I was driving on Highway 75 going north. Apparently, the throttle body of the car was defective and nobody had any idea (yeah, right)! The car literally just cut off suddenly while driving which could have caused a serious accident. Luckily, I had towing and rental on my insurance, so I was able to have it towed and still have a car to drive while mine was being fixed.

The lack of empathy for people displayed by the employees at Barrett Motors is truly sickening. The people that work in collections are very rude and will make you feel like garbage if you can't make your payment. Oh, they'll say they will work with you all day long, but when it comes down to it, they turn their backs on you.

I wouldn't buy another car from here NO MATTER WHAT. I don't care if Barrett Motors was the last place on Earth selling  cars, I'd rather walk! I probably would end up walking anyway because your inventory is crap. I don't see how you people sleep at night.

This may sound biast because my wife works and takes care of a couple Horses that the owner of Barrett Motors has stalled and cared for--However, that being said, in late 2003 Mr. Barrett knew we were struggling to get the both of us back and forth to work and he suggested we go to his dealership because he said they had a 2000 Pick-up that had some miles on it but he said he knew it was a Good truck and he'd give us a good deal because he knew that we didn't make very much money. I think we only made 26,000 between the the two of us.. They charged us 5000.00 and that price included the tax and title for the truck and didn't charge any finance fees--which basically means they didn't make any money off the sale to us.. We paid the truck off in a years time and still drive it to work today (Feb. 29, 2014) But this is not the end of the story--in 2010 we bought a 2007 Ford Focus and we made our payments up until I was laid off from my job because the economy finally caught up to the company I was working at and just like the person in the orginal said I went without making several payment (4 to be exact)-- and the finance dept was extremely helpful and understanding--finally my wife and I decided that we weren't going to be able to pay for the car so again we contacted the finance dept and told them we were going to bring the car back to them because we just couldn't afford and yet they still tried to work with us by deverting the payments, but it was evident that a job wasn't going to come soon enough so we turned it back in to Barrett Motors.. Today I am Happy to say that I found a Really good and steady job making 30,000 a year myself + my wifes income and without the owner of Barrett Motors knowledge of my income they contacted us two weeks ago and asked if we had gotten back on our feet and if we were to come in and see if they had anything we would be interested--and when I asked about our credit with them they told me that since we turned the Focus back in-in good condition--they didn't hold it against us or our credit and that we were still in good standing with them.. Now all that maybe because we know Mr. Barrett--but from our understanding--He's actually retired from there and his son, along with the help of  Mr Barretts brother run the dealership and Mr Barrett rarely contacts the office--So in our eyes Barrett Motors is one of the best used car dealerships that is NOT out to rip you off--only to see that your able to get around in a good used car---Period!!!

On another note--prior to all of the things I have said--I'm 48 yrs old and grew up in the south garland area and when I was 20 yrs old, a friend of mine that is no longer alive due to a drunk driver bought one of his first cars from Barrett Motors and after his death I actually bought my friends car from his parents and drove it around for almost 4 yrs until I gave it to my sister who is 8 yrs younger then me and she drove it for an additional 3 yrs--meaning the cars that I've had anything to do with Barrett Motors--truly has been reliable

Pay for your car when you sign a commitment and if you can't make those payments and commitments dont make them come looking for you to get the car back that your not paying for--turn it in

And you can buy from and trust Barrett Motor

I'm really sorry you encountered this with Barrett. It's been a pleasure working with Ronnie and Donnie. We've bought 2 vehicles from them and have been extremely pleased and they worked with us when my husband had major abdominal surgery and was off work 13 weeks instead of the 2-3 we expected.  I spoke several times a week direct to the finance department and they helped us hang in until we got caught up.  We purchased from them because they're definitely one of the best used car lots in the metroplex, offer a good product to us with less than stellar credit, and stand behind their product--we bought a van and in 2 weeks the engine literally blew, they picked it up, overhauled the engine and it never cost us 1 penny because it was within their 90 day policy--however, after the 90 days, any major repairs can be financed in if we choose.  We purchased by word-of-mouth by friends that have been dealing with Barrett since the early 90's. We've sent 4 friends and our son out to buy from them and will purchase another vehicle within the year.

One more thought...Even though my credit has improved enough to easily purchase a brand new truck I still chose buy another truck from Barrett. Steve, I hope you didn't think that I was bashing your company....Its was more like a suggestion for the service department. As a business owner myself I strive to keep happy customers myself and I appreciate your hard work and dedication. There are not many independent car dealers that have been around as long as you have...that should speak for itself. Keep up the good work.

Growing Pains

It is true that our Service Department recently has had some issues. With the addition of our third location in Sachse and our recent expansion of our Service Facility, we have had to overcome some personnel shortages and some growing pains. We are working on those and as of late have hired more technicians to help facilitate those problems. We also have recently been certified by the State to perform State Inspections. I'm sorry your issue was not handled in a way that was satisfactory to you. I take our customers choice in doing business with our company very serious. I hope that in the future you will allow us another opportunity to handle your service needs. Joe, contact me at the main office the next time you are around and the next oil change is on me. I want to make it up to you.

Barrett Motors...not as bad as the original reporter claims

First off...I don't consider myself to be a victim of this company. With that said, continue to read. Last year my family had some unexpected custody issues with my 9 year old daughter who has lived with me since birth. We needed to hire an attorney to handle the claims that my out of state ex was making and needless to say money got tight pretty fast. I contacted David Phillips and Dee Martinez at Barrett before we got behind on our payments, after explaining the situation to them over the phone I asked if it would be possible to defer the next months payment to the end of the loan (so I would not have to make up back payments ) and not only did David agree to the request he deferred 2 months even though I had only asked for one month. I have been a Barrett customer for many years and I have never heard of the 2 people that you claimed to have talked to. Barrett's quality of vehicles is impressive to say the least...I have 2 vehicle that I purchased from Barrett #1 2003 Chevrolet Suburban that I have had for 4 years now, it has 155,544 mile and I have NEVER had a problem with, the only thing I have done is put tires on it. #2 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche (Mr. Barrett had been personally driving this truck for quite some time when I bought it) I have put 16,397 miles on it since I bought in December 2008 and have had some minor issues that can be expected of a vehicle with this many miles, no complaints though. The Avalanche had 104K on when I bought it and was well aware that I was not buying a brand new vehicle. Barrett Motors Service Department...if there is a problem with Barrett it's in there service department. The driver seat was torn when I bought it and my salesman (Mike Barrett) said that they would fix it for me as well as the chipped windshield. For the Christmas holidays my family and I went to Indiana and we left the Avalanche at Barrett so they could fix the seat and the windshield. A week later we came back and picked the Avalanche...they had the seat "patched" and they made it look worse, I took the truck to Huffines Chevrolet in Lewisville and paid to have the driver seat cover replaced. The windshield was not fixed. Jason Barrett told me to call him and set up a time to repair the windshield...after going back and forth on the dates several times I just paid out of pocket and had it done myself. A week or so later I noticed that the rear axle was leaking oil (I am not complaining...this can be expected of a high mileage vehicle) I contacted the service department about the issue and was going to pay out of pocket for this, I was told that I would need to leave it there for about a week to repair. Once again...I made a appointment at Huffines Chevrolet on a Friday morning and they had the job done within 2 hours. Barrett motors does sell quality USED vehicles, I would advise anyone with credit issues to check them out...they report to the credit agencies and have 3 year loans instead of the 5-7 years loans that are common now. Keep in mind...if you expect a new car and a new car warranty you should buy a NEW car from a NEW car dealer. Barrett motors is a quality used car dealer with fair deals, they do not have the typical used car dealer atmosphere! as a long time customer I can vouch for that. There service department....well that is one area that needs improvement...and lots of it. Questions? Feel free to email me [email protected]

Always two sides to every story

#10REBUTTAL Owner of company

I'm not quite sure how to respond to these accusations. Having only a first name listed does not enable me to investigate this particular account. However, I will say this in defense of Barrett Motors. BMI has been in business now for over 25 years. Our primary business is that of financing vehicles for people who have had credit problems in the past. That financing is the main source of our revenue. It is in the best interest of our company to keep accounts on the books and paying. To have to repossess a vehicle is a last resort and is of no benefit to anyone (including the company). In those instances a customer is lost as well as a financial loss incurred in that the vehicle has to be sold in the wholesale market and the remaining balance written off or paid by the consumer to maintain their credit worthiness (which rarely happens in this industry). I'm not sure why it was that the only communication from the customer was through voice mail as our collections department is in the office six days a week to receive calls and to help customers to keep their accounts current. It is true that we offer financing on repairs for our customers after the sale. This is a service we provide to our customers for the period of time that their loan is with us after their warranty expires (provided free of charge). It is also interest free and completely optional. All of our vehicles are Carfax certified and serviced before sold. So I am not sure what the issue here is with the quality.......something I take very serious as I personally do all of the purchasing. Further, there is no, nor has there ever been, a "Ms. Farley" or a "David Barrett", that worked for our company. Being a dealer who finances people with credit issues lends itself to having a certain number of repossessions. I wish it weren't necessary, but it is. The people in whom have this happen will almost never have anything good to say about the dealer or financial institute that had to do it. As far as I can recall, I have never been called a "scam artist" or "unscrupulous" by anyone other than people who's accounts ended in repossession. Fighting the steroetype of being a "used car dealer" is something I have had to fight all of my life being a second generation dealer. I take our reputation very serious and I believe a search of the Better Business Bureau or a call to the Rowlett Chamber of Commerce or even taking the time to contact the Dallas County Auto Dealers Assoc. (in which I served on the Board of Directors for several years) will show that our reputation is as good as anyone in the business. I hate that your account ended in a repossession....really. It means the end of what could have been a long term customer, which is what makes any business successful.

$200 a week may not be that far fetched. The first car I ever bought was at one of these self finance places, I paid $150 a week for a used car, because they did no credit check, and I had the option of returning the car with a 30 notice. Yeah, I was young and stupid, and would never make such a deal again, but I know for a fact that they had cars on the lot that were upwards to $200.00/week. So it actually is possible. Anyways, my point in the matter was not defending one side or the other. It was just a comment.

$200 per week? I don't think so. That would be at least an $800 a month car payment.

Signed a contract

You signed a contract with them to borrow their money and pay them back on a schedule. It is not their problem that it rained and you couldn't work. You have a legal binding contract. It's not like you borrowed $10 from a friend. How is this a rip off? And by the way, if it was a "measly" $600 and you were able to walk to the dealer and pay it the next day, WHY DIDN'T YOU PAY IT IN THE FIRST PLACE

3 payments could be three weeks rather than 3 months

To the person that responded that the original report filer must have been 90 days or 3 months past due, that may not be true. Many "home finance" dealerships take payments weekly. 3 payments behind would then be 3 weeks or 21 days behind, which fits appropriately into the story.

Boy, did we have alot of rain!! I go by Barrett Motors during the week on the way home from work. The cars I see out front are not what you would call 'desireable.' Pretty soon I am going to be looking for a car for my son. To know now that they won't even listen when hard times happen well that's enough for me. Thanks for the info.

You state "20 days we were unable to work...due to excessive rain". Yet you were 90 days or 3 months late, on your vehicle payment. Doesn't add up. All the rest of the info I can understand.
