My best friend and I visited Berlin, New Hampshire in October to view wild moose. I made prior lodging arrangements online with CheapTickets at the Budget Inn in Berlin. When we arrived at the Budget Inn, there were no vehicles whatsoever in the parking lot. I realized why there were no cars once I entered the room assigned to us.

There were stains of unknown origin everywhere on the carpet. The room was absolutely filthy and reeked of mold and mildew. I returned to the office and told the manager we could not endure staying in that filth. He told me there would be a $25.00 cancellation fee. I received nothing in writing nor did I sign anything from CheapTickets or the Budget Inn stipulating any cancellation policy. Would you pay $74.99 a night to stay in absolute filth? Would you pay $25.00 so you would not have to stay in squalor? I know of no one who would.

After threatening to call the health board on him, the manager voided my VISA purchase in full and told me he would not charge me the $25.00. I was shocked when I received my VISA statement showing a $25.00 fee from the Berlin Budget Inn. This was posted one day after I was at the Inn. This individual is operating under deceitful practices and should be jailed for extortion. I spoke with several people in Berlin during my stay, and they all told me they would NEVER recommend the Budget Inn to anyone.

VISA has credited my account for the $25.00 charge. I filed my complaint with the Mayor of Berlin, the Department of Consumer Health and Human Services, the Better Business Bureau, the Consumer Protection and Anti-Trust Bureau, the Attorney General and the Governor of New Hampshire.

I just received word the Attorney General has begun an investigation into this thief. I only hope my efforts will keep other consumers from having to experience what I did.

If you booked your hotel room on Cheaptickets as you claim, then you would have paid Cheaptickets directly for your stay -- this fleabag hotel would not even have your credit card on file unless of course you gave them your credit card when you checked in (which would be your mistake). So how would they be able to charge you a cancellation fee or anything else? Before going off the deep end with your numerous reports to numerous agents, why not contact Cheaptickets first and see what happens? Normally places like Cheaptickets take customers' comments very seriously, as it is by satisfied customers that they are able to build their business. Lastly, as a side note, what exactly did you expect by a place called "Budget Inn"? The name pretty much speaks for itself. It sounds like you got exactly what you paid for.

After a little research, I have just discovered that our two stories are quiet similar. As a matter of fact both of our Budget Inns are owned by the same people. I reserved my room on Orbitz.com for the Budget Inn in North Stonington CT. Upon arriving at the Inn, I was immediatly concerend about staying there. It was very run down and there were a lot of broken down cars and debris littering the property. When we went into the moldy smelling office we were greeted by a very dingy man and a little girl. The man spoke no English, and the little girl who spoke only some English was his translator. We asked to see the room before deciding to stay or not. And as soon as we entered the room decided no way were we staying. We went back to the front desk and told the man we would stay else where, and we agreed no charges should be made to our card. When we got home from our trip, we found a 90 charge on our credit card, more than one nights stay +tax. They certianly ripped us off!! We called to discuss this, we were both met with rude insulting people. We were yelled at and called liars. Unfortunalty this was an authorized charge so the bank would not refund us either. I am really mad that these people can get away with this and I would like my 90 bucks back. why should i pay to not stay in a hotel, that gave me the heeby geebys from the get go?? These people need to be shut down. and I will write as many bad reviews on as many websites that I have to until i get results.

I have visited this town on many occasions and let me tell you 3/4 of this dirty towns rooms are simular, this is a dieing town since the Paper Mill shut down. If you want to stay in some nice rooms for around the same money stay in North Conway on the strip and drive south to Conway, pick up the Kangamangus Highway there, go 3 miles to the big mud hole on the right side of the Highway at dusk or dawn and you will see your moose, sorry that you had a bad stay in our Beautiful State. Good luck next time.
