Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
I bought a sony xplod car stereo for my car last summer of '01. They were offering free installation at the time. I know how to install car stereos myself but this would save me a LOT OF TIME I thought.

I was told that there may be additional fees up to $35. I was ok with that. When I got my car back they handed me a bill of $80!!! That's more than DOUBLE of the additional fees I was expecting! I was shocked and furiously angry.

I asked them what exactly did you put in my car. They added a bunch of sh*t that wasn't necessary to add in the first place.

I already had an older Sony car stereo in my car that was professionally installed elsewhere that they could've just replaced it with the new stereo.

Days later I called the Best Buy satisfaction hotline. They did NOTHING! Then I called the manager of Best Buy to take off whatever they charged me for it.

He said its was "non-refundable". I've had lots of bad experience with Best Buy before. They tell you one thing but when things goes bad it's another story.

When Best Buy says "Free" there's always a catch attached to it. Is this what Best Buy means? If anyone out there willing to help me out here that would be greatly appreciated.

If you carefully read the rebuttal, the customer was given an opportunity to indicate the maximum amount of money they would spend and opted not to. You cannot site some law that clearly is not applicable since this is not a repair, but an upgrade. There is a legal distinction between them. The customer is responsible for ANY document they put their signature on.

Please contact the CA Consumer Affairs Bureau of Electronic and Appliance Repair (BEAR). The consumer must be (1) given an estimate PRIOR to repairs, (2) repairs cannot exceed the estimate unless customer FIRST approves them (by phone is okay), (3) If requested in advance, all parts shall be returned to the customer. Violations can be administrative and/or criminal. Go to their website at http://www.bear.ca.gov/ The same rules apply to Auto repair.

Keep in mind if you, the consumer who is supposed to keep yourself informed, read the fine print, you might be surprised to see it says "extensive labor and parts extra, a 3 dollar material fee applies to all installs". Now I'm not sure what kind of vehicle you are driving but those parts can add up quick, lets take a normal GM vehicle. You need: Antenna Adapter - 11 dollars Wire Harness - 16 dollars Dash Kit (Usually) - 16 dollars That is the bare minimum. Sometimes, such as when you have cars with 4 inch speakers, you need to add little bass blockers (capacitors) to keep the power of the after market deck from blowing. That is another 10-20 dollars depending on if you need one or two sets. From there you get into custom labor which is a grey area, for a Maxima with a Bose system, for example, the average charge at Best Buy is usually about 50 bucks in labor because it has to be re-wired. Anyway, sometimes they do add things you don't *have* to have, but if you were smart and filled out the installation form properly such as the box where it says "call me if the total will exceed (put in number here)" then you would not have had the problem.
