On December 18, 2015, my 82 year old father in law was having driver side window issues, my father-in-law is a retired USN SeaBee (21 years), honorably discharging as a Senior Chief, with 2 tours of duty in Vietnam ; Not knowing where to go he pulled into Big O Tires located at 5115 W. Peoria Ave. Glendale, AZ. These people charged him $215.99 for a window regulator and $133.99 for a window switch, plus $95.00 labor (1 hour). Then demanded CASH, total invoice $498.94 Part # DOR 741-738 ($215.99), AND DOR 909872 ($133.99) These are Dorman parts and any auto parts store stocks these for $99.99 and $79.99, respectively. A mark up of $170! This is a clear case in which the manager at Big O Tires took advantage of a 82 year old Vietnam Vet, they assumed no one would look into this.

No one was playing the "Vietnam Vet" card, no one refused to pay, however; If you feel paying over $170 markup, being charged $133.99 for a part that was never replaced Plus the part number does not exist, then I suppose you're just as greedy and ignorant as Big O Tires! Please read all the responses before you make yourself look stupider than you already do.

Exactly - anyone who plays the Vet card is a moron.  I'm a female Vet and never once have I ever had to say that to get out of paying a fair price for something.  This guys been whining on tons of websites ... get over yourself

Update: I recently looked at the “master window switch” that Big O Tires claimed that they had installed in my father-in-laws vehicle on 12/18/2015; I noticed it did not have a shiny new look to it. This aroused my suspicions. I then did a reference check on the part Big O stated on the invoice, which was part # DOR 909872. I checked Dorman’s website and there was no such part number, I then contacted several different auto part retail stores, with same result, no such part number. I then contacted Dorman directly; they informed me that such part number does not exist. I also contacted several different licensed businesses that specialize in window replacement; they all informed me that 1) it is highly unlikely that a “master window switch would go “bad” and 2) that there was no such part number (DOR 909872). However, the other part listed DOR 741-738 does exist; window regulator. The above issue clearly explains: 1) My father-in-law was taken to his residence while the alleged repairs were being done. 2) After the “diagnoses” Big O called my father-in-law stating that they had found the problem and that they would repair it. 3) Big O called yet a second time claiming that the vehicle needed yet another part so that his window could be fully functional. 4) My father-in-law was never shown the used/defective parts. 5) Window regulators and master window switches for this vehicle ARE NOT USED AS CORES! Since the first post/comment, I have been contacted by Big O Tires corporate offices in Florida. So yeah right, Big O Tires doesn't rip off customers? Nor do they take advantage of 82 year old Vietnam Vets!

Ok Big O hustles seniors and vets, better?

Dorman parts are Dorman parts, the invoice clearly shows the part numbers, these DORMAN parts are the same quality as any other DORMAN part no matter what auto parts store/supplier they are purchased from, they are replacement parts available at most auto parts stores at nearly the same cost. This is a clear case in which Big O Tires, more so the manager, relied upon pure deception and GREED to take advantage of a senior citizen (in this case an 82 year old Vietnam Vet) by holding his vehicle hostage and claiming that everything under the sun was wrong with his window. Facts) The manager at Big O dropped my father-in-law off at his residence while they allegedly "diagnosed" his vehicle, once at his residence he received a call saying it was "one part" that needed replacement, then Big O calls back a second time claiming another part needs replacement. In order for my father-in-law to get his vehicle back, he had to pay the amount they requested. It seems Big O cant diagnose anything right and the customer ends up paying for it. And you're saying this is all ethical? I'm sure had it been your father or grandfather that had been "hustled" you wouldn't be taking this issue lightly, however, you must be as devious and greedy as Big O Tires! But then again, I know you're the manager of Big O, and you're only digging yourself deeper and deeper every time you try to justify your unethical greedy business practices. Check the BBB report, you also lied through your teeth on that as well.

You never claimed the merchant charged more than the agreed upon amount or complained about the quality of the repair so your claim of fraud is a false allegation. If you were not present when he picked up the car then you have no way of knowing if the merchant offered to return the old parts. We can’t rely on the recollection of someone suffering from a case of dementia. Some parts are known as ‘core parts’ and must be returned to the distributor as per the service provider agreement.

$95 labor to remove a door panel, remove and replace defective parts, and then replace the door panel is more than a fair price. Maybe the parts used by Big O Tires are of better quality than the parts available at the auto parts store. Do you have first hand knowledge that the parts available at the auto parts store are the same or superior quality than the parts used by Big O Tires?

“lying to senior citizens”

What was the lie?

Proprietors have the right to require cash payment for their services. You can complain to all the agencies you want but they will all inform you that we live in a free enterprise economy in which the cost of goods and services is not subject to regulation. Perhaps you slept through that lesson in your eighth-grade civics class.

Nothing in your complaint supports your claim that the merchant took advantage of or lied to the customer. You have not presented any evidence to even slightly support your claim of fraud.

Sure you served haha!

This is how Big O Tires makes their profits; marking up parts 50% plus, lying to senior citizens, then holding their vehicles hostage until they are paid in CASH, never actually showing what the problem is, however relying on "just trust us, we'll fix your car". Thank God for laws protecting consumers. And believe me, the appropriate agencies have been notified. This issue will not magically disappear.

Being A Veteran Has NOTHING To Do With This!

Oh yes...before they did anything, they asked to see his 214.  Right.  Those of us who have served get damned sick and tired of you whiners who pull out the Veteran card just for the purpose of gaining sympathy.  It is an absolute insult to us who read or hear you cry babies cheapen the uniform and military service because you didn't get your own way.

By the way, in case you haven't heard, this is a democracy and it is based on capitalism.  This isn't Cuba.  Any business can charge their own rates and its up to a smart consumer to determine if they want to pay those rates.  Business don't work for nothing and profit is not evil.  If you were so, so concerned about what he was going to be charged, then why didn't you go with him?

keep trying, Big O rips senior citizen vets off!

"It is typical for a business establishment to resell merchandise at an amount greater than their initial expenditure." $170.00 in mark up? $95 an hour labor? from a second rate tire shop? Really? No wonder Discount Tires has more business! "Customers have the option to patronize a business or comparison shop at competing business establishments." We're talking about an 82 year old Vietnam Vet, who was "desperate" to have his window "repaired" as it gets extremely cold this time of year, a senior citizen with border line dementia. Big O knowingly and deliberately defrauded an senior citizen veteran. As they didn't think anyone would look into the matter. "Why didn’t you diagnose the problem, then purchase the parts and repair the window yourself?" That's NOT the point, the point is Big O took advantage of an 82 year old Vietnam Veteran marking up parts $170.00, in addition, after calling several licensed repair facilities, they all confirmed the power window switch and the power window regulator DO NOT go bad at the same time. It is also highly likely Big O did not install a new window regulator as they failed to produce the "used/old" parts.

It is typical for a business establishment to resell merchandise at an amount greater than their initial expenditure. This is commonly known as profit. Without profit, a proprietor would be unable to compensate employees and pay overhead expenses.

Customers have the option to patronize a business or comparison shop at competing business establishments.

Why didn’t you diagnose the problem, then purchase the parts and repair the window yourself?
