I did some AC work on a remodel and gave me a check for $2000 that’s NSF.
I’m having to take it to small claims court for collection.
The check also has an old address where he no longer lives.

If you go to small claims court, your judgement will include court costs. This "John" character wants to take AT LEAST half of what you're owed (assuming he gets anything at all). Now THAT would be a rip off!
