Google that, Fed Debt Collection Practices Act. It tells what what is legal and what's not and also what your rights are. Always let them know that you know your rights under the FDCPA and that any violations will be reported to the FTC. This will put a stop to any illegal or scams, but not legit debts. Always send a cease and disist letter via certifeid mail and keep copies. Don't worry about protecting your address, in this day and age I can get anybodys address in few minutes, beside if they have your phone# they prob already have your addy as well!!

JE, Cut off all communications with them. NEVER speak to any collector on the phone. NEVER. NEVER!!! It doesn't matter if they have your address or not. If they got your phone#, the address is a given. It is irrelevant to the case at hand. First, you are NOT responsible for your grandfathers debt unless you were on the account or listed as a caretaker, etc..of his finances. It is illegal for them to even contact you about someone elses debt. Second, that "debt" is totally uncollectable as it is past the legal statute of limitations for enforcement of collection in court. Third, they would have to provide validation/proof of debt before they could go any further. They are just hoping to scare you into making some payment or agreement to pay which would re-affirm and validate the debt. Cut off all contact except for a CEASE COMMUNICATION request that needs to be sent by certified mail/rrr and be sure to put the certified# on the letter itself. Relax.

Send them a letter demanding validation of the debt. This is an outfit of scam artists and it's not likely your grandfather even owed the money. When you send the letter, you can also tell them to cease and desist in their attempts to contact you except to respond to the request for validation. If you don't want them to have your mailing address, get a P.O. box for a brief period. It's worth the small fee. Send the letter certified or registered with return receipt requested. There are sample letters on this site as well as another site. Good luck.
