I had booked an SUV for a reasonable amount on the Budget wesbite. Two days, with taxes, was around 80.00

Upon my arrival at the Budget counter, I saw a nicer Expedition and wanted to upgrade to it. When the counter person said okay, she swiped my credit card, and then said 'I'm sorry, sir; your credit card is declined.' I said "Declined?? What are you trying to authorize on my card?" She replied "Oh, we're trying to authorize $500.00" I told her, in a not so polite way, that Rodney at the reservations center told me the amount that would be authorized was the rental plus 25%. The counter lady told me that Rodney was wrong. I ended up having to rent from another company, due to the incompitence of the people at Budget

Two days later, I found a 50.00 charge on my credit card from Budget. When I called to inquire, my CC company told me it was 'a missed rental'. I called the customer service number, talked to a supervisor, and told them of the experience I had. They refused to credit the amount. Totally infuriated, I told the supervisor I was going to call my attorney, and file a lawsuit agains tthem for this stunt, and intended to make it a class action lawsuit; at which time the supervisor sent a credit back to my credit card for the 50.00.

Watch out when you rent a car from them; they may authorize more than you think.

Hold Placed on Card

The Budget in Trinidad put a 600.00 hold on my card for a 178.00 rental....so it doesn't surprise me to hear about a 500.00 one.

About the authorization hold.

The hold amount should have been on your online reservation, and the reservation agent you later called, should have said the hold will be the amount of the rental plus 25% OR X amount ($200 for credit card, $300 or $400, in the last 2 years, I have never seen nor heard of Detroit having a $500 hold) whichever is GREATER. In your case, the base amount would have been greater, so that amount should have been held. The hold amount, is there, to ascertain, that the funds will be there upon return of the vehicle, afterall, Budget is trusting you with a $20,000 plus value vehicle, they need to have some kind of guarantee. This amount is not taken but just froze into your account. After the rental, that transaction is no longer on your card. Whatever you rent, you have to leave a deposit, and it is usually a base amount, just be glad they dont make you leave a percentage of the value of the vehicle.
