I just wanted to correct the earlier response that you have to pay off your account to close it. This isn't true. You can close your account at any time. I used to work for a major credit card company and I know this to be correct. Of course interest and any applicable late fees would still apply however you can close your account a any time. Also, you should never wait until your due date to make a payment. Common sense should tell you these things take a little bit of time to post. If you make a payment on their website it does tell you if you make your payment after a certain time it will not post the same day. I believe their automated system says the same thing. If you are going to wait so long to make a payment, you should not be surprised if there is a consequence to that.

I am not saying your complaint isn't warranted, but I have been a customer of Capital One for well over 5 years now, and have NEVER had a problem with them. As a matter of fact, I moved about 3 years ago and in all the mayhem of the move, I had a few bills that I spaced out completely! A few weeks later, I got a statement from Capital one with a late fee and an over-the limit fee...I called and explained the moving thing to them, and they had no problem whatsoever reversing the charges from my account...of course, at that point, I had NEVER made a late payment. "you scratch my back and i will scratch yours." You can also have your statements sent to your email. I set up autopay through my bank to ensure my payments were not late...

Hi! Curious with a few questions as I have known people who worked in credit card companies and they taught me alot about how late fees and interest accrual can inflict $$ damage to your cards: 1. Was the $34 a minimum payment due? 2. If so, what was the total balance owed on the card? You said you had to pay over $400 to close the account so I assume that you owed more than $34 on the total account. I ask this because if you called to make your payment after their cutoff time for payments, they will have assessed you interest on your total credit card balance due, which would be that $100x dollars you mentioned. Closing any credit card account requires a person to pay off the entire account plus interest. be careful as Capital One has ALOT of fees that can triple and triple. If you call again, ask to be forwarded to their "Office of the President" (not a supervisor or manager)and you will be escalated to a certain group that has more power over your account. If they are not helpful in getting you to someone who can resolve your issue, tell them you will file a complaint with the federal entity that oversees banks (cant remember their name off hand but they are like the FCC). Just a few federal complaints on a bank and an auditor shows up in their offices, which credit card companies do not like :-)

Yes, they have some expensive fees. Sounds like they hit you with a late fee, which caused you to go overlimit, triggering an overlimit fee. One trick they have come up with to help bring in more late fees is a cutoff time of 3:00pm for payments (later than that is considered next day). sorry, allowing you to give a competitors name would instigate others to just file against their competition, to only come back later to suggest their company your comments on this policy are welcome! With all the dirty things Capital One is doing to so many people, I suggest for all of us to launch a class action law suit against them.
