Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?

Shortly after my mother moved into a retirement community her health care power of attorney introduced her to Jennifer Black and browbeat her into taking on this person as liquidator of mom's valuables. My mother did not need the money but did need the space, ended up selling off huge treasury of fine, antique silver-which doesn't take up a lot of space in a very haphazard way - sets of things were broken up, almost as if the task was undertaken in furtive haste. My mother was borderline dementia at the time. When I saw what was happening I asked my mother to stop and consider her children, who had no silverware. Mom asked what I wanted and I said I would think about it and get back to her. I said this in the presence of Ms. Black who was there doing a thorough inventory of Mom's belongings. The next day all the stuff had been removed. I asked Ms. Black for an accounting and she said she could not do so on ethical grounds but said I was free to rifle my mother's files. When I told her Mom had no accounting she said she would send Mom another copy but that copy never arrived (I know as I was the only one with the key to Mom's mailbox at the time.) Now Mom has died and I am still unable to get an accounting of all the stuff that was sold. Quite a lot of unique and valuable family heirlooms have disappeared and I would like to know, just for clusure, what got sold and what may have been taken by building staff. I want to know because I grew up with these items and I just want to know what became of them, but Ms. Black and her friend, now the Executrix, won't allow it - again on "ethical" grounds.  I did see some of the invoices and was horrified to see how little the charming, finely crafted 18th century silver was going for. I feel that my elderly mother and her family were taken advantage of.

We offer downsizing services for families which is often difficult for the client, as well as, children of the client. The person posting this report has never been a client of Caring Transitions Seattle. Our client was the Parent of the person posting the report and in 2013 she reached out to me regarding assistance with several services we provide from shipping items to a family member, obtaining appraisals, and liquidating unneeded items to create safe spaces in her condo. My client was a smart, strong minded and funny lady. She made her own decisions about the items she wanted to sell and the many lovely pieces of antique furniture, artwork and other heirlooms she retained for the family. I supported my client as she requested; as it should be. Being a senior does not make you incapable of making your own decisions; even if your child has a differing opinion. It appears that the sales recaps I sent my client, twice, were indeed found by the person posting the complaint. When she last contacted me, approximately 2 years ago, I resent the requested information. Since that time, I have not been contacted by anyone from the family regarding the services we provided. I wish the family well; their mother was a lovely woman and I know many people whom will miss her.

Power of Attorney Rules All

#3General Comment

Thu, August 18, 2016

It sounds like there was a Power of Attorney which, legally, means that you as the daughter have no right to that information.  There was an agreement between the Caring Transitions office and the Power of Attorney.

I certainly understand wanting to know...but again, legally, it sounds like the company help up their end of the bargain and the agreement with their client.
