Sara,
Being "only" one month behind is still being behind on your payments. Of course the bank is going to try and collect their money from you. Are you really surprised by this?
Yes, the economy is rough right now but that doesn't absolve any of us from making our car payments per the agreements that we made with our lenders. Are you aware that they are trying to work with you? They would have been well within their rights to have simply repossess the car by now.
The good news is that the bank doesn't really want your car, they only want the payment that agreed to make. That means going out there and finding some paying work, even if it means a job that you really don't want to do. There are jobs out there.
In the future, if you know that you're going to be late, call the lender before the payment due date and explain the situation to them. They will work with you if you're willing to work with them.

Sara:
You signed a contract to make each and every payment on time. In return, they loaned you the money to buy the car. You failed to make a payment and they call you. Exactly what do you expect them to do? You lost your job and that's regretable. What is step 2, Sara? You get another job. You get a weekend job, you work nights. You may need to take a job that get's your hands dirty or requires you to work all night. Maybe loading or unloading trucks, stocking shelves, washing dishes, cutting grass, whatever it takes to get money in. Don't tell me there are no jobs. You have financial responsibilities which need to be met. When one door is closed, a mature person opens another.
