I purchased a Cisco Linksys router in May 2010.  The router is no longer working correctly.  I must unplug and reboot the router multiple times in order for it to work.

I contacted Cisco for assistance.  They informed me that my warranty expired in May 2011, and, if I wanted any assistance at all, I would have to pay a fee that was more than 1/2 of what I paid for the router itself!

I will be researching other manufacturers.  I just think that a product I bought barely a year ago should not be experiencing problems and the company should fix the problem.

Moral?

So just how long beyond the warranty period should a company repair or provide free tech support for a product for it to be "moral" in your eyes?  2 Months?  4 Months? 4 Years?  Forever?

Where is the line as to what is "Morally" covered and not covered?  Should they just give everyone 1 hour of free tech support that can be used anytime(even after the 12 months)?  If they did I can guarantee you that it wouldn't be "free"...they will just increase the cost of the product to offset it.

Now is it bad that it only lasted 14 months..yep.  Should it last longer..of course.  But the fact is that it is a 12 month warranty and unless there is a separate "Moral" warranty they are under no obligation to do anything.

Technically not a ripoff but morally it is

Just about all makers of these things have the same crap policy. They won't say BOO to you after the warranty ends unless you pay them, and they know at that point you're just going to throw your hands up and buy a new one. It's horrible that they can't spare their technical support to at least hear a question and offer some basic advice after the warranty is up. Cisco bought Linksys some time back and scaled back their warranty, as did D-link and others to no more than 1 year. If you find another brand or model that has a better warranty/tech support policy, and can squeeze it by the RR filters, please post it here.

Lesson Learned

Yes, I did confirm that the issue is with my router.

My last LINKSYS router worked for 4 years without incident.   I thought that was excellent, so I purchased a new router for LINKSYS when I began having problems with the old one.   It did not occur to me to check the warranty period based on my past experience.  Had I known that I was purchasing a product that would only work for 14 months, I'd have explored other options.

Lesson learned on my part.  I'm sharing my experience so others know this is something to check into and won't make the mistake that I did.

I have found just the opposite of what you're posting...I've used Linksys products for years, my current DSL router/modem is made by them.  They have been very reliable. They have a pretty good reputation.

Does your warranty cover 12 months or as you seem to expect, 14 months?

Was an "unlimited warranty" offered when you bought it?

Get a new one, the Chinese make some...should really be reliable...not.

You weren't ripped off, your warranty HAS expired.

It's also possible your provider or computer could have a problem...not likely, but possible.

Sorry about your bad experience.
