We purchased 1 1/2 tons of 3/4" red stone from Countryside Nursery during their "Customer Appreciation Week" on 8/6/13.  We priced the stone we needed around town and every place was the same.  $59/ton, so this "complaint" isn't a case of "you get what you pay for", the company was in line with every other place.  We simply chose Countryside because they were the closest to our home and it happened to be free delivery during the day we purchased.

They dropped the stone in our driveway exactly where we asked them too and at first look, we were happy with the stone.  Due to our work schedule, we had to cover the stone pile with a tarp and were not able to "install" the stone in our garden beds for 3 weeks.  So from 8/7/13 until 8/30/13, the stone remained 100% covered from the elements. When we were finally able to complete our yard project on 9/1/13, we were really happy with the overall look of the stone.

About a week after finishing, we had some light rain, we noticed that the rock was starting to change to BLACK in one small spot.  Wasn't a huge issue as we figured this was just other rocks the place sold that got mixed in.

However, sometime around 9/20/13, we had a heavy rainstorm overnight and in the morning, we saw that most of the once "red stone" is now almost fully BLACK AND YELLOW.  Some red stone is still remaining, but only under the eve of our house, where rain hardly hits.

We drove back to Countryside and the manager told us "He can't control the color of natural stone and if the quarry hits a vein in the mountain, it may not be red".  He seemed to know that this rock DOES change color like that, but he was completely unwilling to do anything to recify the situation.  Even after showing him how the dirt washes off to reveal the real color, he still claimed it's "not his fault".  So what they advertise as "red stone" is in reality just any stone at all, caked in RED DIRT" so when it storms, the dirt washes off, revealing the REAL color.

By that time, there is nothing you can do about it and you are stuck with NOTHING that you paid for.  You purchase RED STONE, you never expect it to change color in less than 2 months.  At least when you purchase colored mulch, eventually you do EXPECT it to change color over time....  certainly NOT 2 months though.  Yet, stone should never completely change from one color to the other just due to RAIN....  yes, sun fades paving stones, etc....  but again, not in less than 2 months of purchasing the product.

Here is a before and after photo:

After the lame excuse this manager gave us, we called Rock Bottom, Home Depot, Copeland's Mulch Depot, Richardsons Nursery (other places around our town that sells the same type of stone) - every manager at those places said that "red stone" will always be red throughout when you crack it with a hammer and while it may fade in the sun, it should not completely change color due to rain. FALSE ADVERTISING & RIPOFF!!!!! Manager/Owner Tom Jones won't refund our money and told us to re-purchase elsewhere if we weren't happy. All we wanted was our money back because we have to remove and redo what we already did.

The general retail industry standard is 30 days from date of purchase. You state you purchased on 8/6/13 and had your rain storm on 9/20/13 this means you would be past the standard 30 day return window when ANY manager can officially assist you. No I dont work there, I am pulling this information from your own post. Hence WHY I said its past the 30day window where the manager could help you.

Im not saying you shouldnt be helped on this situation. I am saying keep your bullshit attitude away from the ppl trying to help you. Past 30 days you need to take this up with the MANUFACTURER!!! As almost every product sold has some form of manufacturer warrenty to protect the consumer against issues such as these. As such you should be able to show both your reciept of purchase and a few pics of the stone being faded and get some relief from the ppl who made it.

I understand you are upset, but thats no reason to take your vitriol out on someone attempting to help you resolve your issue. Thats totally unprofessional on your part. How do you sit there and b***h and complain and when someone gives you the information to help you, you lash out at them. Save your anger for the people you need to use it against to resolve your situation. Not on someone giving you both good information and a explanation as to WHY you were treated as such.

And nope I do not work for them. Never been to a store and dont know anyone who works for them.

Sorry, but not once did I ever say "I knew the return time had passed, but I went in anyway".    No where is it posted or written that all sales are final.  Let me guess, you work there.  Otherwise, how do YOU know what the time frame a manager can help is?  That manager didn't even offer to do anything at all, but give us excuses. MOST managers at reputible places would at least offer SOMETHING.  They did nothing at all except tell us to pay for it elsewhere if we wanted it replaced.

Yes, it's true they do NOT make the stones, but they CAN control how they advertise what they sell.  The "STONE" itself is not red, but the dirt covering it is.   The manager made it pretty clear he was aware of this "problem".  So yes, they FALSE ADVERTISE.

As I stated, product is expected to fade OVER TIME, etc....  stone color doesn't just WASH AWAY in 6 weeks (technically after 2 1/2 weeks of exposure & ONE major rainstorm).

As you stated you had the product PASt the time in which that manager could assist you. You go in and complain that you want your money back AFTER the time period that the manager can assist you. There in lays your problem. You are blaming the manager when in reality it is you who had to return the product WITHIN the time frame allowed on your reciept. The manager can only do so much. Their hands are tied after the time elapses. The manager DID NOT make the stones. That would have been someone else. I would suggest to you that instead of blaming someone because they CAN NOT help you without loosing their job, that you take this up with the manufacturer. They are the ones who made the brick. This would generally fall within the standard 1 year manufacturer warrenty as the stones have faded in two months.
