I entered a CVS store in downtown Detroit and was immediately confronted by an individual with a gun. That individual barked an order at me, when I asked him what he said. He stated in a harsh and disrespectful way, "I said put the bag on the counter." I asked him did he work at the store. He stated he did (he was not wearing any uniform or CVS attire). I put my bag on the counter and asked if someone would watch it-he said he would. I noticed plenty of customers were in the store with their bags-strange. I walked down an aisle for my item which was not in, and went to get my bag with the aforementioned individual no where near it. My entire time in the store at this point was about 60 seconds. As I went to exit I could see the individual waiting at the exit for me, as I left he told me to get my hands up and patted me down in the store in front of all the customers. My ID was demanded and when he saw my college ID- he bacame uneasy. I asked him for ID. He calls me into the store and he shows me he is a Detroit cop moonlighting as a LPS guard. I then told him he was going to be sorry he profiled me and showed him the latest issue of Billboard magazine -with me in it in a half page article. Facts:

-I am a very public figure and false allegations like this led to the magazine article and 50,000 others. I filed a complaint with CVS and THEIR consumer affairs immediately told me the guy was absolutely wrong in a taped conversation. I filed a complaint with the Michigan Civil Rights Department and CVS responded with 2 pages of pure lies, slander, libel, and defamation. According to them the officer said I acted "suspiciously"- I looked like someone that stole from the store the day before, they left out the pat down- that the fact I own a rap label was enough to side with them. The one thing they did not do was simply give the security tapes of the incident showed who was lying and who was not. I see there are very simlar incidents of this consumer racial profiling involving CVS everywhere online. See www.stopalldiscrimination.com. I am suing.

Why Blame CVS for this? Isn't the cop the one who made the profile?

#2UPDATE EX-employee responds

Sat, December 22, 2007

As an ex-employee for 3 years at CVS I have never read such an ignorant and one track complaint. Why do you cry racist? I hate to break it to you but in the store I was located at, African American males were the top thieves walking in and out of the store! I myself am no racist before you try to pull that card again. The cop is held responsible here, not the store. In the past when there have been robberys at the CVS location I worked at we were instructed to do nothing but cooperate with the police. This included handing over tapes, giving descriptions, etc. If the cop thought you matched the description then he had the right to be suspicious. HOWEVER, I do disagree with the way he handled it, if he felt the need to call you out then he should have been more subtle and just pulled you aside and talked to you. So who is the racist or biggot? Not CVS, but that crooked cop. And one other thing, suing is only going to get you slandered more, crying the race card everytime something like that happens only creates more racial tension and hatred. So please, just file your issues with CVS, the corporate office will definitely take care of you, they always give people who file complaints pretty much whatever they want.

First of all, I'm sure he was not implying that he walked in with an empty grocery bag or something similar. I would assume by bag he meant backpack or other personal article used to carry items. Perhaps he even had a bag from another store that had items in it. I often go from one store to the next so I don't have to repark because I enjoy walking and will walk from one store to the next with packages from the priors. However, I am a mid-20's white female and am NEVER asked to leave my purse or bags at the front counter. I've even walked into CVS stores with a backpack on prior to going out and have never been asked to leave my items at the front...however, as mentioned before I don't fit a profile. I feel this is a perfect example of profiling if others in the store were not asked to leave their bags up front. I personally would have walked out if I were asked to do so, but I can't say I would in every case. If I were just going in to grab a quick item and it were late at night and I knew CVS were the only place open, I would have done exactly as the original poster. It is unbelievable that he was patted down after leaving the store on top of everything. I really hope this thread doesn't turn into people blaming him for his actions because he really didn't do anything wrong. He had as much right to shop there as any one else, even after being harassed. By not shopping there the police officer who did profile would have won in a way. I'm glad that Jerome was not bullied out of shopping there, although I'm sure he's rethinking where he's going to do his business now, and it sounds as if he has money to spend. I commend you for making this post Jerome and hope you pursue this matter.

Why were you walking INTO a store with a bag? Did you really think they would just let you meander about with it?

Wait, am I the only one who is confused? You walked into a store & was approached by a man w/a gun?? So you asked if you can put your bag on the counter while you shop? What??? Why in the world would you even consider staying in that store after you were approached by a man w/a gun? What did you need to buy that was so important? I don't mean to be sarcastic but if that was me I'd turn around & walk out! Maybe you left something out of this story?
