sold my tickets without allowing me to present any ID. I Made a reservation for my wife and I.When I received the emamailed confirmation it was the wrong first name. They refused to change it! why not put the name down as presented on an actual legal document and stick with that. One should not sell a ticket without legal proof of name before requiring that at a later date. (both current and future proof should be required not allowing for screw up on either end).

The typical airline will assist a travel agent in changing the name on a ticket.

They believe the agency will not try to rip them off. The average comsumer however, is another matter. I work in an airline reservation center. Try and call to change the name on a reservation if you want! You will be immediately to no! This does not matter if the reservation is an e-ticket or a paper ticket. Sometimes, they will change the name for a t.a. for a 50.00 fee if it is an e-ticket. If it is paper, forget it. Either the agency or the passenger is going to eat the loss. Agencies have reissued paper tickets for their clients to the tune of 100.00 or more. That t.a. may be right that the airline worked with her but what did she charge her client for the effort????

Delta DOES Correct Incorrect Names

I am a travel agent for a MAJOR international travel agency. Frequently, we will have to do name changes for our clients because their secretary booked them as "Michael" and their real first name is "Charles" and "Michael" is their middle name. Delta does this for us all the time, no hassle, no fees. If this does happen, call the airline and explain exactly what happened. However, you need to be aware that the name problem must be provable, because if "Harold" is on the ticket and your name really is "Betty", the airline will not change the name because it suspects you are trying to change the name on a ticket and Harold can't go on the trip so Betty is going in his place, which is illegal. Airline tickets are a CONTRACT valid in the name of the traveler ONLY. Non-refundable tickets are not transferable. The airlines and the Federal government REQUIRE that your name on the ticket match your photo ID. This is especially vital when traveling internationally as you can be jailed in a foreign country if your ticket does not match your passport precisely. Here are a couple of ways to make sure your reservations/tickets are accurate. 1. when you make your reservations on the phone, have the agent recap your entire reservation including: - your home phone contact and your phone contact in your destination city - spell out the passenger names - all flight numbers - dates and times of travel - origin, connecting, and destination cities, and if your flight makes a stopover but you don't change planes - any special requests such as wheelchairs, special meal requirements, pets, unaccompanied minors, etc - make SURE they are confirmed. 2. Ask for the agent's "sign" (each airline agent goes by a two letter or two number sign) and if they are unwilling to give it, ask for their first name and the location of their reservations office. They MUST by law give you this info. 3. Ask the agent to explain the fare rules. Can the ticket be refunded in case of illness or death, what happens if you get a flat tire on the way to the airport, etc. Airlines and travel agents have access to the complete text of the tariff for every fare. A copy of the fare rules can be mailed to you upon request. 4. Have a pen and paper handy and write down everything they tell you. Then, read it back to the agent. 5. DO NOT GIVE THE AGENT YOUR CREDIT CARD NUMBER UNTIL THEY HAVE DONE ALL OF THE ABOVE. ONCE YOU PURCHASE A NONREFUNDABLE TICKET, YOU HAVE SIGNED A CONTRACT AND THE AIRLINES HAVE YOUR MONEY. Delta and other airlines will correct misspelled names, nicknames, etc., without a fee. Just be rational in your explanation and be ready to explain why you booked your flight as "Bubba" and your real name is Elmer Fudd Smith, etc. In 20 years I have NEVER had an airline turn me down on an honest-to-goodness name mistake. One other thing. Please check in for your flight at least 2 hours ahead of time because of the increased security procedures post-9/11. That way, if you do have any unforeseen problems with your ticket, they can be straightened out in a timely manner before your plane leaves the ground without you.
