Bradley Haskins Unlicensed practice of law,

I was in need for legal advise 4 years ago. I wanted to refinance my home. I was a US Army veteran. I needed some help to negotiate my loan terms. I met World law group who said they will help me with my financial problems. I paid them close to $10,000 over 3 years but nothing happened. The legal services offered to me were not real as they did not have license to practice law.

Then to my horror I saw this online about them. They were indicted by Grand Jury of Colorado, North Carolina, Florida and sued by Consumer Financial Protection bureau for fraud against United States and Fraud against unsuspecting Americans. Derin Scott, Bradley Haskins and World law and subsidiaries were indicted for fraud. Haskins ran away to Czech republic. I THINK Derin Scott and Bradley Haskins are still working together. We need to warn others not to fell in the clutches of Derin Scott. Inform the FBI please.

The North Carolina State Bar and the N.C. Department of Justice will be allowed to move forward with a lawsuit against several companies the agencies claim are engaging in the unlicensed practice of law.

The N.C. Business Court rejected a motion to dismiss filed by Orion Processing, Swift Rock Financial and World Law South in a Nov. 9 decision, saying the arguments presented by the companies were based on a “strained” reading of applicable state law.

The State Bar and NCDOJ sued the companies in 2013, alleging that they were engaging in a scheme to hold themselves out as a law firm promising to settle consumers’ debts and provide documents and advice to consumers in exchange for payment. The complaint says the companies are actually corporations under North Carolina law and are therefore not allowed to hold themselves out as being able to provide legal advice.

The complaint accused the companies of engaging in unlawful debt adjusting, unfair and deceptive trade practices and unauthorized practice of law. The complaint also names Orion owner Derin Scott and World Law chairman Bradley Haskins as defendants.

Writing for the Court, Chief Judge James Gale sided with the State Bar and N.C. DOJ. “The Amended Complaint contains extensive, specific allegations against the World Law Defendants and WLS individually that, taken as true, state a UPL claim against WLS,” Gale says.

The Business Court’s decision to allow the lawsuit to proceed is the latest legal setback for Austin-based Orion and Sacramento-based World Law.

State and federal officials from across the country are going after the companies for allegedly promising debt relief services to thousands of consumers but never providing those services. At least four states have sued the companies for charging legal upfront fees and making false promises of legal representation.

The companies have already been enjoined from doing business in North Carolina after a Wake County Superior Court judge determined they were improperly engaging in the practice of law.

The companies are also facing a federal lawsuit filed by the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which alleges the two companies collected $67 million in illegal fees from at least 21,000 consumers.

Orion has already filed for bankruptcy and was ordered into liquidation in August by a federal judge in Austin.

Attorney Alfred Carlton was representing the companies until recently. He has since withdrawn, according to the Business Court decision. Gale notes World Law is no longer represented by counsel.

Katherine Jean, general counsel for the North Carolina State Bar, declined to comment on the case, saying it was “not proper” to comment on pending litigation.

Last month, the State Bar reached a settlement with LegalZoom in a long-running dispute over whether the online legal service provider was giving unauthorized legal advice. The settlement resolved a $10.5 million lawsuit filed by LegalZoom, which claimed the State Bar was illegally "monopolizing" the state's legal market by refusing to register LegalZoom's prepaid legal plans marketed to individuals and small businesses.
