Beware this scam will at the very least cost you a lot of wasted time trying to get out of it since it is very well setup.

This is the way this works. When you register a new domain GoDaddy will often offer you a free private registration for a year. So you just check a box if you want it and check out. After a year when you go to renew your domain you have to pay $9.95 for the next year of private registration there is no way to opt-out you ether pay the extra $9.95 or you cannot renew your domain. So you contact GoDaddy support and they tell you they cannot help you since Domains By Proxy is a third party (not true) and you need to go to their website and login to your account but you need your username and password which you do not since you never signed up for anything you just checked a box. Now you find out they have no phone support (big surprise?) and they do not answer your email. So maybe you just give up and try to transfer your domain to a different register but when you try and get your Authorization Code to move your domain from GoDaddy the request is blocked by Domains By Proxy and you get no response. So I am guessing most people have given up by now and just pay the extra $9.95 and with 10s of millions of domains Godaddy is making millions on this scam. Free is far from free just say no! and save yourself a lot of grief

I did a quick search and found many complains (example below)

I myself is also experiencing the same issue at the moment.  I have paid with my credit card previously. But when I told go daddy to remove the protection, they told me I am not the registrant. I paid for hosting the website and they had no issues recognisign that I have autority over the account and would take my credit card.. But now would refused to take instruction when I want to remove the protection. It is holding me hostage. So I decide to take the business somewhere else. They refused the EPP or any information.  BEWARE of SCAMS operating at GOdaddy and its associated business. They are not here to protect. They are here to make your life very difficult and force you to stay against your will.

 Hostage By Proxy

I registered my domain name with GoDaddy in 2008. At the time they offered a free year of their privacy service, which I took advantage of. Since then I have renewed the domain and the (now paid) privacy service 3 times, but I have now decided to transfer my domain name to a new company. In order to transfer to the new company, I need to have the privacy service removed from the domain name. I have now found out that the privacy service automatically created a second account for another website called 'domainsbyproxy.com' and I never received the login information for this account. I contacted support to update the login information for this account so that I may remove the privacy service and transfer my domain name. They told me I had to prove ownership of the account by sending them a photocopy of my drivers license, which I did. I was then told that my information did not match that on the account, and so they have provided me with ZERO information, and no way to remove their privacy service. Both the domain name and the privacy service have always been paid for on MY credit card. To renew the domain, I also have to renew their privacy service, which they will not let me remove... forcing me to pay additional costs for this domain name. Now that I want to move the domain to another company, I am unable to do so because of the privacy service on the domain. I have contacted support and been emailing with them back and fourth attempting to get some help or guidance on what options I have. I am hitting a brick wall and they are simply taking my domain name hostage essentially. Forcing me to stay with GoDaddy, and also forcing me to pay additional fees for the privacy service if I choose to renew it with them.

Domains By Proxy does more than protect your identity. Among other things, it provides another layer of security (by means of a separate Domains By Proxy account) to help prevent domain hijacking.

Accessing the DBP account is sometimes frustrating for customers who have misplaced their account login information. But, we are here to help!

If you need to retrieve your customer number or reset your account password, simply:

1. Go to www.domainsbyproxy.com and click “Log In”.

2. Click “Forgot your login information?”.

3. Select the type of assistance you need: retrieve the customer number, view the password hint, or reset the account password

4. Follow the instructions and check your email.

If you don't receive the email because you’ve changed your address, just:

1. Go to just go to:  https://www.domainsbyproxy.com/emailupdate.aspx to access the Email Update form.

2. Enter the requested information and upload your government-issued identification.

Because we value our customers' security, we verify each request we receive so as to ensure we are giving access only to you, the authorized account holder.

Once you’re logged in, you may cancel privacy by clicking the Cancel Private Registration icon to the right of the domain name, then clicking “OK”.

It seems you have not read any of the thousands of posts on this problem just mine for some reason so let me bring you up to speed. A great many people have had the same issue and it is the same in each case Domains By Proxy never sent  any account details even when the account was established.

Domains By Proxy does not use the contact details provided by GoDaddy and it seems they often make a mistake when pulling a email address from the who is info as again can be seen by many posts and blogs by others having had these same issues and by my own experence.

I think by the tone of your response and by the fact that Domains By Poxy contacted me yesterday stating they would respond to my ripoffreport that you are not a "customer" but you that are representing Domains By Proxy and the "moral" is that you are not fooling anyone.

Nice try

#5Consumer Suggestion

Being a customer owning a few domains myself with the added privacy, I have had experience with Domains By Proxy. While it is unfortunate to have this go through a seperate entity instead of just in your account they do give you the information that you need.

If you pay attention to your email you will receive your Domains by Proxy account info at the time of original purchase and can easily update your password for it. If you no longer have that email and you don't have the email address that you used at that time, hopefully you used legitimate contact info on the domain. The registered who is info is serious to icann.org and the company selling the domain. If you entered in falsified information or a business that doesn't actually have documentation or "doing business as" documentation, then you are s.o.l.

Moral here is pay attention to what you do and what you receive and take proper ownership.

Monday 4-21-2014 I found that the domain I was trying to renew was taken from my account on GoDaddy. I contacted GoDaddy and was told the domain was now more difficult to renew and there would be new service charges to restore the domain. I realize I was beaten and I agreed to pay for another year of  Domains By Proxy if Godaddy would wave the new service fees and let me pay the standard renewal fee plus the Domains By Proxy fee and they agreed.

But I then contacted GoDaddy and also Domains By Proxy support and notified them that I had filied a complaint with ripoffreport.com and incuded a link to my report.

Within hours I was contacted by a trouble shooter from GoDaddy and he told me he was going take care of the problem personally and gave me his full name and contact details.

30 minutes later I was contacted by Domains By Proxy and the fellow told me he was going to walk me though the process to cancel my account. He was very nice but he would only use a nickname and told me I could contact him by emailing support only.

I was asked again for a picture of my id and at this point I gladly sent it. Seems that one got lost also and I was asked to send another copy but then I was able to cancel my account and have control of my domain restored to me. (Now I just need to try and get my money back but they said that was up to GoDaddy)

I realized these two guys had nothing to do with company policy so I keep it short but I did ask why was it that my agreed on term of the contract of one year was over but still Domains By Proxy would not simply restore control of my domains back to me?

I was told it was for my own protection!

Thank you rippedoffreport.com you really woke these guys up and helped me out!!!

I recommend ripoffreport.com 100%
