My husband and I found a car on craigslist.org. We were interested and got hold of the individual. He said he was in navy and we could pay through ebay motors.

We went to Wal-Mart because they said a moneygram was the only way and sent the money. Faxed and emailed the for confirmation. We have names, invoice numbers, all of the emails, receipts, id numbers, addresses, everything.

We called the FBI and reported it to our police department. The guy who we sent the moneygram D.L. picked it up 3hrs later. They had to have security cameras there. They need to get catch these people. This is very illegal. 4000.00 is alot of money and we need some answers or suggestions on what we can do.

eBay had nothing to with it!

While they are listed in the report title, it's worth noting that eBay did not rip this person off. They had nothing to do with it. Scammers will use names of legitimate companies such as DHL or eBay to make the victims think that the deal is legitimate. Keep in mind that eBay does not have a program to cover vehicle purchases on Craigslist. For that matter, neither does Craigslist. For more information, go to Craigslist and click on the autos for sale section. There will be a prominently placed link above the ads that leads to tips on recognizing scams. For quick reference, here it is: http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams

You've Been Scammed

You've been scammed. If you check the EBay site under auto sales there are warnings about doing business with people who will only take payments through MoneyGram or Western Union. And yes, while there may be security cameras at the pickup location, I doubt these folks used their real names so the chances of catching up with them are pretty slim. My guess is that you were under the impression that you were getting a car that booked out for a lot more than $4k. Always remember, if it is too good to be true, then it is. If you're told the only way to pay for something is through MoneyGram or Western Union--run away.....

The first thing YOU can do is never send a wire transfer to complete strangers. You have just lost 4 grand. Was this a "too good to be true" price? It usually is, and thats where your trouble begins. They guy was not in the navy, there is no ebay motors middle man, and all your "information" is phony, as you can be anyone when you pick up a wire transfer. You've been had bad.

That you do not send untraceable moneygrams to people you don't know. Would you give $4K to some stranger on the street in return for a promise that he'll deliver a car sometime in the future? That's exactly what you're doing when you send a large moneygram to someone on the internet. The biggest tipoff that you are being scammed is the requirement that you use Moneygram/Western Union to send funds to someone you don't know personally. That's the only way the scammer can get his hands on your cash without leaving a paper trail. I think you'll find that you are out of luck. The names, receipts, email addresses, etc... that you have will all turn out to be phony. It's childs play to create documents on a computer and use public wi-fi to make the originator untraceable. I've seen this scam on this site dozens of times, but I have yet to hear of anyone being caught. The main reason is that the authorities don't have any real identifying info on the scammer to begin an investigation. Even if the Moneygram place had a camera, that would only give them a picture of some random person to go on.
