One year ago today, I sent my 1975 12 string to FOTW for a trade-in. So far, I've attempted to trade for 1 used and 2 different new instruments. I don't even know how many phone calls and e-mails were not returned.

Instrument 1 would have been a mandolin. James promised to hold the next one that came in and call me. Did not ever happen. I wandered into the site one day and saw two of them listed, but they were gone by the time I called. Ok, so that's not going to work. Next.

Instrument 2 would have been a different mandolin. First, it was on order. Then, "Good news! It'll be shipped at the end of October". It wasn't. In February, I found out it was not going to be available via FOTW.

Trying to figure out what was actually in stock never happened. I thought the Micael Kelly line was in stock, so that became choice #3. But, alas, it was not in stock. I spoke to Nathan on or around May 11. He said he called MK and it would only take 2-3 days to get the guitar, so I went for it. Obviously, that did not happen.

Meanwhile, the rep at MK says the guitar was shipped to FOTW, but returned to MK. He then informed me that FOTW is "having some financial difficulties". He keeps saying he will call them and try to work something out, but he doesn't seem to have gotten any further than I have.

I have filed a complaint with the NM BBB, but so have many others. I received a form from them Friday that stated that FOTW did not respond to the complaint.

This is a company I had done business with twice previously, so I trusted them. There is more to this story, including the trade-in promise of "fair market" value not being honored. But I will stop here.

If it matters, my trade-in is still listed on the site (updated in Nov '04) under used guitars. It is the "rare" Takamine Don Miller 12 string.

Thank you.

#2UPDATE EX-employee responds

Wed, October 18, 2006

In response to the complaint against Folk of the Wood about a guitar that hasn't been returned or credit given. Mickey Cochran has had nothing to do with Folk of the Wood for well over two years and sold this buisness last year in July 2005 leaving an ACCOUNT to cover ANY and ALL outstanding credit's or trade in's. This individual has already received a credit if he had one pending. This company was started as a service to people who wanted to learn to play and never intended to become the problem that it did. This company was left with debt beyond belief and no PROFIT was ever made regardless of what people thing about being greedy. If greed goes with debt then that's what it resulted in! LOTS OF DEBT All customer's with complaints pending have been taken care of at the expense of former owner MICKEY COCHRAN. This was a labor of love on Mickey's behalf and he had nothing to do with the slow return on credit's. But, as I mentioned, any and all credit's have been taken care of by MICKEY, NO ONE ELSE. The only fault MIckey had is in hiring people he couldn't depend on to take care of probelms in the first place! After taking on a job to pay his bills leaving the company to be run by people thinking only of themselves! This company is located in Ruidoso, not Alto!

#5Consumer Suggestion

Mon, December 19, 2005

I had my issue with them resolved because I filed a report with the New Mexico Attorney General's office. They have a free Consumer Protection service. Note: Folk of the Wood went thorugh major "restructuring" a few months ago. Apparently, Mickey Cochran and Co. are no longer runnign the show, but they most certainly are involved. The ripped off dozens of people, and then they fell apart, but the new owner/operators are makign amends, so I hear. You may want to call them. Try once, then submit with the New Mexico Attorney General's Office. The godo news is, they are still in business somehow, and that means you can retrieve your loss, if they stole your money.
