I am writing because I am fed up with Fred Meyer and have been for years. It started five or more years ago with their stupid new rules about having to be 17 or older to buy a CD with Explicit Lyrics. They actually ID you like you're buying cigarettes. Not only that, too frequently have I gone shopping there and been followed by security. One in particular was a couple months ago. The guy followed me down all the isles, nevermind the fact that I spent $300 dollars that night.

Now what pushed me over the edge was yesterday. I found out a while ago that they don't accept hand written checks because of identity theft. Well, I cashed a paycheck there a few days ago for $200. That obviously isn't much so yesterday I talked my boss into giving me a $250 draw. He went out of his way to make me a printed check so I could cash it. Freddy's is the only place to cash a check on a Sunday so I had to give them what they wanted. I go to cash my check and everything seems fine. But the clerk comes back from her computer and says that because I cashed a check a few days ago I couldn't cash another one for a couple of weeks. This ticked me off but I very nicely said how stupid that was. The lady had the nerve to get an attitude and says "Well I'm just following company policy".

Now that doesn't seem bad, but with the other words she said to me I felt like a criminal committing check fraud or something. This is the last straw. I'm sick of them trying to control people, when they're a business, not a government. And their prices on everything they sell is outrageous. I can't believe they get away with charging as much as they do when there's a Safeway across the street.

When I told my mother-in-law what I was doing she wanted me to add that whenever they run an ad in the paper with coupons, it seems as if they understock their sale items because they NEVER have what's on sale. She said this has been going on for 10 years or more. So know this, Fred Meyer in Newberg especially, but also across the Pacific Northwest, is a ripoff and should be boycotted by everyone!

I can only comment on a couple of the issues that you complained about, the first being the I.D. requirement on CD's this is not a company policy but a Federal Law just like asking for I.D. on alcohol or tabacco they have no choice in this matter I am sorry if the employee you spoke to did not explain this to you correctly. Second is the check cashing policy correct Fred Meyer does not take hand written checks do to identity theft and fraudulent checks ,as a company Fred meyer must make decisions on when to cash a check and when not to, our system allows us to monitor account information which helps in making those decisions. I do not know your full story but let me give you a example much like your complaint. A customer comes in and cashes a 200.00 payroll check it is the first time they have cashed a check at one of our stores and everything seems liggit we cash the check for them, the customer comes in a couple of days later tries to cash another 250.00 check and the cashier puts it through the Micr reader and the system flaggs the account # with only one other check being taken before and it has not been cleared through the banks yet the company has to make a decision on the information they have in front of them. If you were a the owner of your own company what would you do? Their are consistent policies in place for a reason, i am not justifying the clerk getting a attitude but i may get a little upset because a customer yells at me for following a company policy! Do you follow your employers policies?

DONT SHOP THERE! If you are not getting what you want out of your shopping experience, why go there? You are wasting your time. Find a store you do like!

Trying to cash two payroll checks in that short of time should be a red flag. Why don't you use the Bank? Thats what there for! As for security following you: How do you know its security, previous experience? Are you a suspicious shopper? The kind that shops like a shoplifter? Sounds like there is way more to your story that you don't want to share. You would be happier shopping at Safeway!

I shop that store all the time. It is not a bank and they should not be expected to cash your payroll checks. No other stores will do that.AND the clerk WAS following company policy. Also, they only would be following you down the isles if they thought you had or have in the past shoplifted. They have a huge problem there with shoplifting. Plus, you know that Fred Meyer has the best grocery prices in Newberg. Safeway is much higher priced. Quit yer belly achin! Shop someplace else and go to the bank to do your banking!!!!
