I bought the freedompop 4g router for my ipod touch and, to activate it, put in my credit card information.
Their policy was to allow 500mb of data free. They would charge only after going over that amount. For the first month, I did use it and downloaded. I doubt the amount was over 500 mb but they charged me. The next month I did not use it at all but they still charged me.
Its not a free service.

I have 4 devices from freedompop and never once have been charged incorrectly. I been a customer almost a year. they respond fast on Facebook or Twitter. they are always polite on the forum and refund quickly if there are any problems. I think this person didn't research freedompop and had automatic top up enabled. user error doesn't make a company a rip off.
