I received a notice from United Magazine Service Inc informing me that I had an outstanding bill and that it needed to be paid immediately to Galaxy Credit of Peoria, AZ. I immediately suspected that this was a scam because I have not done any business with United Magazine Service in the past and I pay for magazine subscriptions several years in advance. For clarification, however, I called the Galaxy Credit number and spoke with a representative who restated the amount that I owed and informed me that the only way I could pay was by providing them with a check or (as he suggested was more convenient) by giving them my checking account number over the phone, which, he stated would allow them to simply print a check and mail it to United Magazine Service. How simple and convenient, right!

Fortunately, I did not provide them with any information and promptly terminated the phone call. This is certainly a dangerous scam that needs to be investigated before someone tricked into giving these people sensitive information.

Electronic checks

#2Consumer Suggestion

I am not going to touch the subject of the alleged debt. This is purely for the comment about the electronic check being a scam. I used to work for a cell phone company, and they took checks by phone. I got a magazine subscription once paying by check by phone. Using a check by phone to pay something is not a scam. The advantage for you is two fold. One you can control when the payment comes out as most places will take future dated checks. And becuase you know when the money will come out, you can ensure that the money is there. IF you send a check in the mail, you risk something coming up and the money not being there. Secondly, generally once a check is in the system (with a collection agency), the collection calls stop becuase you are paying on the account. If you don't want to pay someone like that, that is okay.
