I purchased a new 2610 the same month they had the last update last year. I believe it was in July (2007). I finally got my update disk last month (March 2008). I am still trying to get a unlock code for the alleged free upgrade. Now Garmin tells me they cannot generate a unlock code because they are expecting to release something that is already for sale on eBay but THEY don't have yet. http://cgi.ebay.com/GARMIN-MAP-UPDATE-2009-CITY-NAVIGATOR-NORTH-AMERICA-NT_W0QQitemZ200217436384QQihZ010QQcategoryZ73333QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I have spent over 7 hours on the phone total trying to get a unlock code. I have been treated like crap when I finally did get someone. Frank was the worst of them all. I have since changed over to Cobra GPS systems. The truck drivers like them. Garmin used to not have competition. They got a bad attitude. Now everybody and their brother makes a GPS. Garmin still has an attitude.

I have three Garmin GPS devices, and strangely, the base maps that came in the older units are more accurate than the subsequent "updates". Too much of the time my Garmin devices with the updates show me out in the middle of a corn field instead of on the Federal or State hiway on which I'm travelling. . I also have Delorme devices, and have found their yearly "updates" are apparently a reissue of last year's software. A rip-off! . For use in a laptop, Microsoft "Streets abd Trips" is quite satisfactory, and will work with most USB "pluggable" GPS receivers. That's, of course, if you have the space to carry a laptop. Very good trip planning. . My most recent GPS purchase is a (bottom of the line) "TomTom" one. Granted, this is the most recent (newest) device, but it's now my favorite. All software pre-loaded, and the most intuitive GPS device I've ever used. Its "3D" view is fantastic! Absolutely SHAMES my Garmin 2610 that cost 3X as much.
