After PCs of various types have been around since the early 80's, I thought everyone knew that NO service organization guarantees your data, that's YOU'RE job.
I worked for years as the Tech Director at a school system with about 700 computers. Whenever we had any serious problems reported, we just reimaged the computer remotely, everything was gone. Our users all knew that they were responsible for their own data and kept anything they wanted to save backed up.
Drives are so cheap and easy these days plus the online backups mentioned earlier that there is no excuse for not having your data backed up except either laziness or ignorance.
The $2,600.00 price is for someone using much higher level software and knowledge to TRY to recover as much data as possible. In some cases it might be worth it.
You actually owe them an apology for demonstrating your lack of knowledge
The warranty is strictly for hardware, everyone knows that.

I hate to say it too, but it's not their fault, you should back up your stuff. Best buy offers back up services and there are places like Carbonite at about 55.00 a year that will make a carbon copy of your files. If you read the warranty, it doesn't do data recovery, this is one of the things you need to do as a computer owner.

Usually I'm not the one to be defending Geek Squad or Best Buy for anything they do or in certain aspects on how they act, but in all reality this is something you should've been aware to start with.

Yea, that's your fault on that one. They didn't do anything.

Data recovery is not covered by any computer warranty. Basic computer operation includes maintaining a backup of your stuff.
Not a rip off.
