We wanted to buy a Toyota Prius, but could not gain the full coverage insurance on the weekend. We were prepared to leave without the car until a weekday when we had acquired the necessary insurance. The finance officer convinced us not to worry about the insurance just yet, because that would be an easy obstical to overcome.

We proceeded with the financing part of the conversation, provided him with a letter showing pre-approval for financing at 9.41% interest. He left briefly and came back with a manager who told us that Capitol One was notorius for misleading consumers about the interest rate they would be able to receive, and that they could get us 14% interest that would match what Capitol One would truly end up offering us.  We accepted their interest rate, believing that was going to be the best we would be able to do.

We went through the entire process and spent 6 hours in the dealership. At the very end, the finance person told us that we could use our current liability financing and would have 3 days to provide full coverage insurance. He indicated that the financing would not be approved until the insurance was provided.

A couple of days later we received a check in the mail from Capitol One to cover the price of the pre-approval financing, where the interest rate was 9.41%, as promised originally. By that time, the financing for the new Prius had already been approved at the inflated 14% interest rate.

The new car was involved in an accident the next day, and there is no insurance to cover the damage. The dealership has no interest in helping us to figure out how we can deal with this situation without filing bankruptcy or paying for a car that cannot currently be driven and may end up totalled.

I appreciate the constructive response. I will contact AutoNation. This information is much appreciated. It may not make a difference in the situation, but at least I will take the opportunity to alert them to the situation (though they may not even care).  
I'm sure what they did was not illegal, but certainly their practices are highly unethical. Not that any other car dealerships are better, I don't know about that. But this one sucks, and will definitely not be getting my return business - ever!

GO Toyota, on Arapahoe road, is owned by AutoNation. They are the largest publicly held Automotive Dealer Group in the USA. It might be a good idea for the CEO of AutoNation to learn more about how GO Toyota operates when selling vehicles, wouldn't you agree?

The BBB is a registered non-profit 501c(6) organization.  It cannot make "profits".  But, as with any sizeable organization, it is not immune from questionable practices.  I did not agree with their 'extra points for paying membership fees' policy.  But that has been remedied.  So, it is now a non-issue. 

Yes.  Toyota, like many large organizations, will exercise discretionary dishonestly (or at least withhold the truth) as a matter of PR.  I do not condone it.  But, I am not surprised with what Toyota did, considering they are an Asian company.  However, as the nature of this 'Ripoff Report' does not involve the dishones practices of senior executives of Toyota (and don't give me any 'tone at the top' argument), it is a non-issue.

Recalls happen to pretty much all major automobile manufacturers.  When a company announces a recall, you should give them credit for being somewhat honest/forthcoming about the problems.  What about the numerous product quality issues that consumers experience for which recalls are never announced?  As I've said, buyer beware.  Again, this is a non-issue to the nature of this Ripoff Report.

Your stock price argument is also a non-issue.  Do you actually understand what happened in the financial markets over the last five years?

Honestly Karl, in reading your comments to other Ripoff Reports, I have started to question the credibility of your intentions to actually help the individual who has been 'ripped off'.

Time to move on...

A 'conspiracy theory' is no longer a conspiracy theory once it becomes fact.

It is a fact that the Better Business Bureau is simply an organization that is out to make profits and will accept money in order to give a company, or even a fake company, a good rating.

It is also a fact that Toyota's top executives believe in lying to the public and the mainstream media in order to protect itself from declining sales and a declining stock value.

Anyone can 'Google' the following and read the related articles and watch the videos on the web for proof-

P.S. Toyota's stock has gone from $138 a share in 2006 to $86 a share today. That's a decline of almost 40% from 2006, right? Maybe all of the lying is finally catching up to Toyota, wouldn't you now agree?

The Better Business Bureau is more than just about ratings.  You can view the complaints against a company to get a better feel for how the company actually operates.  Or, do you beliebe the BBB vets out complaints based on 'bribe' payments?

Karl....Let me advise you on a few facts:
1. I do not watch YouTube videos unless they come from credible sources.
2. I pay little, if any attention, to the opinions of the misinformed and misguided when I purchase vehicles.
3. I spent the better part of this year researching the Tundra, doing side-by-side comparisons with similar trucks, and going on multiple test drives of the different trim lines of the Tundra as well as other brands.
4. I have no sympathy for those who feel 'entitled' to anything (unless decreed by the US Constitution).
 ....and.....
THE TUNDRA TOWED THE SPACE SHUTTLE!

WOW!  I would say you have other issues to resolve (i.e. creditworthiness) before buying a car (a Prius at that).  I just bought a new Toyota Tundra two weeks ago at 0% for 60 months (via Toyota's financing arm).  That leads me to believe your Prius was a used vehicle, several years old.

While I empathize with your situation, we live in a caveat emptor (buyer beware) world.  You need to protect yourself, especially regarding your financial situation.

I still can't get over the fact that you are paying 14% interest on a car loan.  They are definitely taking advantage of you.  Hopefully, you called the Better Business Bureau.

Most car dealerships will do everything they can in order to have a customer drive the car off of their property, because once the customer leaves it reinforces the sale and makes it almost impossible for the customer to cancel the sale.

The way that most car dealerships operate in the USA is a reflection of how the majority of our 'system' in the USA operates. Without deception, manipulation, and trickery, many car dealerships would see a decrease in their sales and in their profits. 

It would be interesting to know if you were sold an 'extended warranty' when you purchased the vehicle. That is one way that a car dealership will make additional profits. Another way that most dealerships will make profits is by raising the interest rate on the loan, when the customer could have received a lower rate.

EXAMPLE: A car loan of $20,000.00 over a period of 60 months at 14% interest would be approximately $465.00 per month, but at 9.5% interest the payment would only be $420.00 per month. The car dealership would make an additional profit on the sale. (The additional $45 per month over 60 months comes out to be $2,700.00 for the dealership, right?)

To sum it up in a nutshell, most car dealerships will manipulate and deceive as many innocent and unsuspecting consumers as possible in order to make profits, even if it means they have to persuade a customer to take a car off of the lot that doesn't have comprehensive insurance, which would protect them if they were involved in an accident.

You are the owner of the car and its up to you to provide full coverage insurance for the car. You failed to do that and you chose to drive the car without insurance coverage. Unless the "accident" was caused 100% by another driver, you are on the hook for the car.

Feel free to contact all of the Local News Stations in Denver and send them a copy of your Ripoff Report. Put it to the attention of 'Investigative Reporter'. (Email a copy and also send a hard copy through the mail with all of your contact information and include copies of the sales contract from the Toyota dealership.)

There is a chance that one of them will contact you and help you by exposing the Toyota dealership on TV. You can also spread your Ripoff Report all over the web at sites like Twitter and Facebook. Just tell everyone to go to Ripoff Report and type in- TOYOTA, and then click on Ripoff Report #973409 and read your Report.
