Great Clips Apprenticeship??? West Bend, Wisconsin
I was interested in Cosmetology training(still am) and decided to opt for an Apprenticeship at Great Clips. I've done my own hair for a long time so I wasn't really familiar with a lot of Salons. Cosmetology School is very expensive. At Great Clips I was asked, "not to tell clients I was an Apprentice." I think most people would agree that a Hairdresser's Level of experience is a normal conversation between Hairdresser and client. Most High-end Salons are very honest and a client will pay the difference for the training and experience: Apprentice, Assistant, Level 1,2,3, Master etc. I chose to be honest about my level of experience. I'm shocked that States let Great Clips and Cost Cutters get away with this fraud. I was on the floor two months and most of my haircuts weren't inspected unless I asked for "help." Prior to this I had 5 weeks of unpaid training where I was left to myself a lot. "People weren't getting paid to train me" I was told. I was expected to be just as good as a full-fledged trained licensed stylist with 20 yrs of experience. They ran with a few complaints and fired me. I never met the owner. I personally didn't let anyone there cut my hair since I didn't trust them. I would rather pay a bit more for honesty and skill and no rush. At Great Clips the ideal haircut time was around 17 min. That's a lot to expect from an Apprentice! I would expect high speed from a Master!
