On April 29, 2009, I had rented a car from FOX Car Rentals in Seattle, WA. I was on a trip for 5 days there and the only money I had was on the card. The CSR who assisted me ran my card 3 times, in addition for 3 incorrect amount totals. This placed a hold on my card totaling 776.67. The actual total was for 183.29. When I contact the car rental company they immediately corrected the transaction on their end. I waited and saw no money credited to my card. I called customer service at Green Dot. I was told by their CSR that when a pending authorization for a car rental transaction is over 200.00 you have to wait 60 DAYS to receive your hard earned money back regardless if it was not your fault. I asked to speak to a Supervisor and was hung up on. I called back at spoke to another CSR who told me the SAME thing over again. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was on hold for 30 minutes. Once the CSR cam back on the line I was told again by the supervisor what the other CSR's told me and there was no way for them to manually release my funds. I asked to speak to a manager. I was placed on hold and additional 45 MINUTES and then was told they would have to take my name and number and have one call me. NO CALL. I went up to the Car rental place to discuss the hardship (how was I going to put gas back in the car, how was I going to get a hotel, food and etc) the Car rental company called Green Dot. They were informed the same information I already knew. They too requested to speak to a Manager and was told they could credit back one transaction in the amount of 150.00 so I had some money. They also said they would have an available manager call them and myself to discuss the situation. An hour later a manager called to say the same thing as the CSR's. No help what so ever and said he would have someone from corporate contact me. It is May 13, 2009 no one has contacted me and my money is still on hold. I have tried calling in numerous times and continually get the same speech and hung up on. It has completely caused a horrible chain of events due to me not having any of those funds available. This is completely out of line and is not advised at the time you purchase this card. There is no management you can really speak to to get a resolution and robots in CSR who say the exact same thing over and over. So for two months they will gain interest on MY money and charge me 4.95 per month for having the card. Sound like a good deal to you?

I also use a Green Dot MC, but would never use it for a car rental.  I read everything on GD's website before I decided to get the card, so I knew the few types of transactions that the Green Dot cards are not recommended for.  You could have made yourself aware of that information too.

From the Green Dot website FAQs:

Can I use the Card to rent a car?

Your prepaid Card may be used to rent a car, but rental car companies "authorize" (have money held) for much more money than the actual cost of the rental car. The reason is that the rental car company won't know if they need to charge you for additional expenses like gas, car damage and extra days until you return the vehicle. These authorized funds will be held and unavailable for you to spend until the final transaction is posted to your statement. This means that you might not have access to these funds for as long as 90 days. To avoid problems when you rent, our advice is to first call the rental car company and ask them what their policy is regarding the use of prepaid debit cards.
