I titled this rebuttal the way I did because while it sure looks like some have had a hell of a time with Green Dot, I have to say I've had a largely positive experience during the approximately 1 year i've been with them. Admittedly this may be because I work for such a humongous organization (Kaiser); perhaps that makes a difference--though it shouldn't! I signed up with Green Dot because I HATE BANKS. I've come to believe their overdraft fees are excessively punitive and predatory, and I had a difficult time avoiding them. I still needed some sort of VISA/MC logo, however, so it made sense to given Green Dot a try. I really have no complaints. I use direct deposit with them with no problem. My only gripe is that they don't deposit until the actual date on the check (whereas when I was getting paper checks I was able to actually cash them 1 day earlier). But that's my greed, a minor quibble. I'm fortunate enough to avoid their monthly premier fee, and i'm able to pay most bills online. There are a lot of places that support card reloads, which, in my experience, have reflected within the hour, if not instantaneously. Don't much care for the $4.95 reload fee of course, but whatever. Overall, I would give Green Dot thumbs up, for a service that provides us semi-indigent folks with a measure of financial access without having to submit to the long d*ck of The Bank. Their customer service is cheapo--i've been on hold too, and can barely understand the reps--but good customer service is always the first thing to go when The Man knows you have to take what you can get. Which describes my current situation perfectly, and will until I make my first million and can afford Jails Fargo or Stank of America.
