Towards the third week in June 2007, we left for a needed rest to Mexico. We were approached at the airport, and signed up for a tour of the Grand Mayan Palace. To make a long story short- we arrived on June 27th, curious to the offer of wine and dine, and to see what was available resort wise. We toured and then wanted to leave to explore Porto Morelos and look at real estate there.
Instead,we politely listened, and fell prey to their strong armed tactics. We had no intentions of buying into this resort; until they offered the concept of
fractional ownership. Listening and trying to comprehend over a five hour period became confusing. We signed and then returned to our home resort, wondering how in the world , two intelligent people, signed these papers.
So we thought, we had five days to rescind, and instead of vacationing, we took off to the computer, and researched.
Aye,aye- this is not a good deal- we are being taken - so I write a rescind letter, call Bank of America - and tell them no deal! They said to me, - oh no-you signed- you owe! I said- Oh no I don't! and then preceded to write our rescind letter to the company, Grupo Mayan.(which I still have). Bank of America RCI granted us immediate credit- I did not take my credit cards so I thought I would not be tempted. Not the case-easy as butter with RCI
We went back the next day to return the letter personally. NO ONE COULD SEE US!! So we returned to our home resort, and tried again on the 29th of June.
After waiting impatiently, we finally spoke to Carlos, a NJ native, and told him we could not afford this and we did not want to enter in this agreement. He told us, we needed to work this out, because, he did not want to see us lose our $5000 deposit. Instead he offered us another contract, for $32,000 instead of $64,000. Our letter was not accepted and they continued to throw all these benefits, additional packages and weeks at us. I felt we had no rights- and again, how could we be so stupid again?- we signed another lesser contract. My boyfriend and I split the cost and it has incurred not only resentment in our relationship; but financially has damaged both of our credit standings.
We have not used this package, and probably never will- because we have such a bad taste in our mouths from these gringo americans that we could vomit on them.
I also am dealing with my feelings of stupidity and frustration. Do we have any recourse in this matter at all??
