How did you make your reservation, and how did you cancel it? By phone, on-line? While there is no absolute sure defense against this kind of problems, but at least with "honest" hotels some paper trail could help. If you make your reservation on-line, print out everything... NOT only the confirmation, but all the room rate, cancelation info you see during the process. If you make the reservation on phone, ask for a fax/e-mail confirmation with cancelation rules. If you cancel on phone, request FAX/e-mail confirmtaion of the cancelation. IF you do not get the fax/e-mail, a warning, that you sent a copy of your cancelation to your credit card company - to prevent charges could help. With REAL scumbags? Nothing could help.... Actually there is one way to strike back: go all the forum/web page where you can find feedback about the hotel, and share your bad experience. Search for : hotel name+review. And always: come HERE to post a report.
