Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
Maybe you can help me...

May 17 of 2004, I put a computer on layaway at Walmart for my daughter for Christmas. I picked it up the first

week of September of 2004.

I kept it here unopened in the shipping carton until Thanksgiving of 2004. We decided to take it up to her then and give it to her early.

She opened it, I believe on the 24th, 25th or 26th of November, 2004 and registered Windows XP that same

day.

About 4-6 weeks ago she went to turn her computer on (that she seldom even used) and the CPU would get so

far into bringing Windows up and then it would just shut off. This happened over and over. This is a Hewlett

Packard Compaq Presario.

So my daughter called Compaq and they tried helping her over the telephone to no avail. Then she called

HP and they said: Well, the warranty is no longer valid so we can't help you. Neither of us could believe it

since the computer had not even been unpacked until November and WindowsXP was not registered with

Microsoft until then also.

So I called and emailed HP about this. A Don or Dan from Corporate Headquarters called me yesterday,

November 15, 2005 and informed me that the warranty began the day I put it in layaway at Walmart.

I couldn't believe my ears. I told him that I thought that was ridiculous and extremely unfair since I had

bought it in May, and my daughter didn't even see the computer until November.

We are not rich and I can't afford to buy her another one and she certainly can't afford to get herself one

either. She has Fibromyalgia, Osteochrondritis, extremely high blood pressure and is under tremendous

stress. She cannot work outside of her home anymore, her doctors have told her that. So she needs

a computer to learn how to earn money from home.

I asked Hewlett Packard to have some compassion and empathy and to please make an exception

to their policies, but they refused. So I'm letting KEZI know about this and will be sending this on

to some newspapers, to the Attorney General of Oregon;

I'm reporting them to the Better Business Bureau and to Rip-OffReport.com. I want everyone

to know how shabbily HP treats their loyal customers. I have bought all my printers and scanners

from them over the years, but no more. What ever happened to making your customer happy? I

guess HP just doesn't care about their customers anymore.

I'm really upset about this and feel I've bee ripped off. I might as well have just taken $500.00 and

thrown it down the commode.

Is there some consumer program out there that can get them to fix or replace my daughters computer?

I don't know where to turn to for help.

Well, I think that HP should rethink their policies. The money I spent on that computer may not be much to some, but it's a lot to me and my daughter. In answer to your comments, which I appreciate by the way.... It is not the software, we've been through that and have done the virus programs and all that. The computer would boot, up to a certain point, then it would shut itself off. After I told her that HP wasn't going to help us, she asked around and found someone to look at it. He said something was loose on the inside. He fixed that, but also said the fan is loose and didn't have the tools to fix it right then, but if she tilted the cpu tower and kept it tilted, it works. I'm still very angry. I just cannot believe how bad customer service is any more. It's atrocious! I don't see how some sleep at night knowing how badly they've treated others during their work shift. They should have sent someone to look at her computer just out of courtesy, but I don't think a lot of businesses even know what that word means anymore. I probably wouldn't have gotten any satisfaction from Walmart either since it had been so long. I guess I can still try. But what HP has done is unforgivable in my book. They should be very ashamed of themselves. I'll never ever buy another HP product and I will warn others.

New computers are often loaded with unnecessary software that can easily be removed. I'm guessing you have too many programs starting at the same time which causes the computer to have a slow boot. I agree, cutomer support at HP is very bad. I had a similar problem that left me with such a bad taste I avoided HP products. Try asking around and find a friend who knows about computers. Often they can remove the offending programs and get your daughters computer working faster. HP should help, but in cases like this, its better and faster to get help on your own. God forbid should you get tech support from someone in India that asks idiotic questions like "are you sure the computer is plugged in?".

I agree that HP is being a little heartless, but Walmart has to take some blame.

When you put that PC on layaway, Walmart sent the paperwork to HP that it was sold, and so the clock started. It sounds like you have some malware on the machine. Assuming you have no vital data that needs to be recovered, your easiest solution is just to reload the machine. You either got a set of CDs with the machine, or more commonly, the restore software is on the hard drive. Look in the literature that came with the machine, or on HP.COM and they will tell you how to restore it to new. Make sure you have virus software, and spyware. You can download a very good spyware program for free on microsoft.com. Good luck.
