Where I live there is no cable internet or DSL. You get an exceptionally slow dial-up connection or you go with a satellite dish. I tried the dial-up and it was connecting at 4800kbps. Took forever to connect so I bought Direcway.

The system cost me $600.00 initally and then $60. a month for internet service. At the time of purchase I was never told or any time during the almost 3 years I have had it that I am now under what HUGHES.NET calls the FAP (Fair Access Policy).

I was basically happy as I had unlimited internet access and usage. Suddenly I can no longer download anything larger than 169 mb in size.

I contacted Hughes.net and asked why I could not download this 612mb file and why was my download speed reduced to 33kbps?

The online technician said I was under FAP and that any time a customer tries to download anything larger than a 169 mb file they are placed on FAP restrictions for 8 to 10 hours.

What this means is they put you on a restriction of bandwidth of a whopping slow 33kbps or less download speed. My upload speed was 223kb.

I pay $60. a month and now I can no longer download any large files and if I do try I am put on a restriction. THIS IS NONSENSE. NEVER in the talks I had with Direcway while considering this expensive nightmare that I would be restricted to a small 169 mb size file.

On the tv ads they brag about blazing download speeds but no where in the commercial do they say.. YOU CANNOT DOWNLOAD LARGE FILES OR YOU ARE PLACED ON RESTRICTIONS FOR 8 TO 10 HOURS.

None of the Cable internet or DSL companies put this stupid restriction on their customers. Hughes said this for equal bandwidth time for all customers.

NOw if I want to pay $99. a month I can have the ability to download large files. This is a rip off. For $60. a month I feel I should not be restricted for any reason.

I have tried to contact Hughes.net and lodge a complaint and they leave you only one way to contact them and it is a phone number to technical support or billing.

I do not want to talk to a technician or a billing person. They are not helpful at all and only say that Your account is limited to 169 mb per hour.

Since I was never told this when I purchased it in January 2003 and was told it would be 2 weeks for installation and then it did not get installed until APRIL 2003 because the installation company was in Missouri, they would not come to Iowa to install ONE DISH,, I had to wait for some one else in the area before they would come here.

I hope that any one else that considers Hughes Satellite reads this as they say you can download large files fast but their idea of large files is 169 mb. Unless you want to pay for the Business package and then you can download a somewhat larger file.

All I can say is I hope some one reads this and can help.

After reading all the complaints about Direcway/Huhges.net I cannot believe that nothing is being done!!!!!! It seems that Direcway/Huhes has to be related to AOL as they do the same things. I also have had slow internet connection problems and thought it was just my luck. Apparently NOT. Is there not a consumers group or tv program that is interested in helping us poor caged paying animals? When I complained of slow connection speed I was told I needed to upgrade from the DW4000 system to the DW6000 system and that I would get improved performance. so for $225.00 and a 15 month agreement I received the new modem and guess what??? NO change in speed and my signal strenght went from 92 down to 78. I was told by tech support that as long as I was over 65 on the signal strength that I would receive the same speed wether at 65 or at 92. WHAT A CROCK. When the dish was first installed I had a signal strenght of 52 and my connection went in an out constantly. I went out myself and repositioned the dish and got it up to 92 and it was so much faster. The technical support for Direcway is UNBELIEVEABLE to say the least. Most of the time you cannot understand what the person is saying. Since I live out in the country and the phone lines are so antiquated and the wonderful phone company here (Qwest) will not upgrade the 3 wire line used back in 1968 to the new lines they use today I cannot use dial up either. I feel I have been frauded as not ever being told of the limits and then being punnished for trying to download a large file. For $60.00 a month I should be able to download anything I want and not be placed on a limited access. In their tv ads they should tell this but they will not as then NO ONE with at least one functioning brain cell would purchase the crap they are selling.
