I got a job in July at Indigo Joe's in Murrieta. I was very excited to go to work and meet new people since I had just moved here and didn't know any one. I loved my new job. It was a brand new restaurant/sports bar for families. At about 3-4 weeks of my job I went to work on a Friday and did my shift. I turned in my money at the end and Joe gave me an envelope with my last check and said I didn't work there anymore. I was very surprise because I did nothing wrong that I know of.

I asked him why and he said that he didn't have to give me a reason. I walked out and told some other servers about this and they were very surprised also, because they know that I work hard. Joe came out from his office and I tried to ask him again why. He shook his head at me and said No, You just leave now. So I did.

I was one of the older servers there, so I think that is why he fired me. He discriminates!

I have a friend who also worked there. She was a very good worker. She told Joe that she hadn't been feeling well and ask him to give her a couple days off to go to the doctor. He told her yes, just let me know what's going on. She ask him if he would keep her position open for her, he said, yes. After she went to the doctor she called to ask when she could come back to work. She had only been gone for 2 days. She talked to the Head server/Joe's assistant about this and his assistant said that Joe said that she was fired for taking the days off for goning to the doctor. He didn't even pay her, her last check.

I was listening in on the phone when she had called and was told this. She was at my house on my phone.

Now Joe and his head server are lying about what they said. Joe said that he didn't fire her, she just stopped showing up. If this was the case then why would she call him everyday that she was gone and let him know about her condition and what was going on, like he asked her to do. This just proves that he discriminates against physical and mental disabilities as well as a persons age.

So don't try to get a job there, because it wouldn't last too long. I wouldn't even eat at a restaurant that the owner or anyone working there would discriminate against anyone.

Thanks for reading my report,

Former Employee of Mismanaged Indigo Joes, Lake Havasu City, AZ

I worked as a food server for Indigo Joes in Havasu since the opening on October 16, 2006. I quit my job after weeks of frustration, disappointment, and nights coming home angry, upset and crying. The stress I had to endure as an employee there amounted to high levels of anxiety and one incident where I almost passed out in the kitchen. For one, the servers are extremely overworked there. The owners will only have 1 or 2 servers on for the day and 3 at night. If it gets busy they won't call anyone else in. I have had to manage 12-14 tables on average with each shift. Most times there is no busser, even at night when a big game is on and it is expected to be a full house. The bussers they do have working there are their sons and cousins who somehow skate by without doing much to help. The other two bussers hardly seem to work anymore. Secondly, the servers are made to look like they make mistakes (made to look wrong or incompetent by management in front of customers or on the floor) if the cooks make something wrong which they ALWAYS do. The kitchen help was not properly trained and still makes wrong orders; so much food is wasted there and thrown away yet they won't give it to the employees for a discount or to eat even though some people working there are just getting by or have to work 2 jobs to pay bills. The management is not caring or compassionate at all and mistreats people. We would often get yelled at for trying to eat and couldn't even take a break after hours of working. I got reprimanded for using my phone outside, for washing my hands too long, for watching a TV yet Trevor can play golf video games with the bussers while customers are waiting. This is unfair. Third, many people have quit because of the way they get talked down to by Trevor and Cindy. Discriminating remarks have been made about being gay and expressing that in their restaurant, hairstyles, the way people look, talk, and act. They pick at people until they are emotionally drained. Trevor has used the terms, I demand you.., I will not tolerate this.., You are never ever.., Transfer your tables to me now or else we are going to have a problem. All of the owners work there except DeiDei who is on leave due to a shoulder injury yet still makes the schedule. Trevor takes tables all day and night while Cindy bartends. People wonder if this is to save the owners money so they don't have to pay two additional employees. Cindy has been seen drinking alcohol while working with her favorite employees who have had a say in the decision making process of who is to be let go. The owners show favortism to people when it comes to giving servers their sections, opening and closing duties, and scheduling hours. Jason has sexually harassed some of the female employees with sexual offers and overt flirtatiousness which has offended some people. Also, the cooks that work there play loud rap music with profanity and there is a lot of horseplay in the back (no wonder the food gets messed up). In addition, the cooks have a difficult time understanding English to read the modify remarks on tickets and are often rude to the servers when they have to be corrected. Overall, this restaurant is mismanaged and poorly run. Many people in this town think the food is gross after finding paper, plastic, hair and other things in the food. The cooks don't wear gloves or hairnets. Is this a health code violation? Also, the food is not properly stored in the walk in which I know is code violation. I personally have endured so much intimidation and suffering just because it was my only job. I have since moved on to a better restaurant that is more organized, professional, and fair. It is sad Lake Havasu Indigo Joes is the way it is since it had the potential to be a great place. I will not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

In California, It is considered Discrimination

I don't know about your state (Alabama), But here in California it is against the law to disciminate against these types of things. Even in the Indigo Joe's own employee handbook it states that they don't discriminate against these things. My self and my friend wouldn't have taken this job if we couldn't handle it to begin with. I've been in this business for over 11 years. I have talked to others who were employed at Indigo Joe's, who have quit because they thought that the owner, Joe Luo, was an idiot. They said that he doesn't know how to run a successful business, and I agree with them. I'm sure he will go through a lot of employees. If he can't even keep the good employees, he'll be left with the bad ones. That doesn't sound very successful to me. Oh well, It's his business and I'm glad that I'm out. Truth be told, anyone with "physical and mental disabilities" as you state is likely to be an unsuccessful fit for a fast-paced, physically active restaurant job. Keep in mind that an employer does not HAVE to hire a disabled person if their disability prevents them from performing the required job functions with reasonable accommodations.
