They Warned Me They Would Burn Me - but that doesn't make it right - $1125.00+ taxes thrown away!

I am always suspicious of companies that need to operate under multiple names in multiple states. When those companies then refer customers to yet other companies with multiple names in multiple states, it's an indication of shady/manipulative business practices. Had Marriott Vacation Club not directed us to Interval International, I would have known by their tricky website that they would be problematic.

Per Marriott Vacation Club my husband made travel reservations with Interval International for a stay in a hotel in NYC. Due to unforeseen personal family events we had to cancel our trip to New York.  My husband requested a PIN number from Interval several times, in order to access the account we now supposedly have on their website. We were never provided with access information, and we were never able to access our account.  When Customer Services was emailed, they acknowledged that they'd received a request, and promised to communicate, but they never provided access to the account.

Interval International has an ad on its confirmation certificates, and other communication, that says, "Don't Get Burned!  Cover yourself for about $10.00 a Day"; urging customers to purchase Getaway Insurance from Travel Guard Group/Insure America/E&O, etc. 866-725-6900.  The insurance must be purchased within 21 days of making the reservation, clearly indicating that a full refund would not be available should a cancellation be necessary.  It is stated that "Getaway Confirmations are Final", but it was not made clear that absolutely no refund could be granted for a trip never taken.

Nothing is noted or explained by Interval International about rescheduling the time purchased, as can be done in Marriott Vacation Club and other timeshare programs. Furthermore, Travel Guard Group, owned by AIG, (or Insure America, E&O, etc.), which has lost a number of class action lawsuits against its practices, claims that it may give protection against certain unexpected events; meaning the company gets to decide whether or not you meet its criteria for refund.

The hotel where we were booked is sold out for the next 2 months. The hotel itself has a policy where advanced booking takes 20% off non-refundable payments; however, we didn't even get the 20% discount because we booked through Interval International. The hotel will have no problem getting other vacationers to stay in the room we booked.  I could understand a penalty fee for having to make a cancellation, but to keep the entire amount, for absolutely no service, is bad business practice.
