I took my Buick LeSabre in for an oil change. They said I also needed an oil filter, an air filter, and a fuel filter. The charge was $143.73. Later that day I began hearing a high-pitched noise coming from the engine.

I went to a good mechanic who I use for repairs and upkeep, and he checked and found a Technical Service Bulletin (#07-06-01-016A, 9/17/2007) headed "Internal Noise/Damage after Oil Filter Change", which warned that the Buick LeSabre and other models (Hummer, Saturn, Saab) needed to have ACDelco oil filters and that "Improper oil filter installation may result in catastrophic engine damage". I had the mechanic drain the oil, change the filter and put in new oil so I wouldn't have to drive back to Jiffylube the way it was. He charged me $66.00.

I then drove back to Jiffy Lube and asked for the manager, explained, showed him the bulletin, and asked him for a refund of $66.00. I had also begun to doubt the necessity for the new filters. He said he couldn't do anything about it, I had to talk to "Mats", at (941) 284-5726, who represented South Bay Lube for the Tampa Bay area.

I called, Mats said he would look into it and get back to me. When I didn't hear from him I called him three more times, and when I did reach him he told me he was too busy to talk to me. He just stonewalled, and it was evident that he didn't intend to do anything about the problem.

There is no bulletin warning against using oil filters other than Delco. All oil filter mgrs meet or exceed standards for the automobile industry.

Sounds like the second mechanic gave you some tall tail to get work out of you. The squeaking was most likely a fan belt issue, either with the belt or a component like the tensioner. A squirt of lube would quiet it down.

Jiffy lube did it right as far as fluids are concerned. They dont get involved with further repairs or diagnosis.
