JOHN ASHLEY RANDAZZO was a seemingly kind middle-aged man in my neighborhood, which is in the high desert. Last year, when my car air conditioner broke, I reluctantly decided to purchase a new car, which I could ill afford. John immediately went on a campaign to convince me to sell him my 2001 Honda Civic, which was in good shape except for the ac. He didn't have much cash on hand, and also didn't have enough money to pay the insurance.

You guessed it, I lowered the payments to $75 a month, nothing down, and also waived the requirement for collision insurance (with the written condition that he would pay for the car in event of an accident, etc.). But the most stupid thing I did was to transfer DMV title to him so he could get the insurance in his name. At the time, I thought this was best in case the car was in an accident, but the truth is, I trusted him.

In effect I wrote off my ownership of the car. Needless to say, John made two payments, and I haven't heard from him since. He moved away from the neighborhood, and although I am certain he is still in this area -- I have little to no recourse against him because, thinking I was helping someone (he has a slight deformity and needs constant medical care -- he says), well anyway, you get the picture.

If you ever meet up with this person do not assume, as I did that he is kindly and harmless as he looks and talks. He is a low-down lying crook and scam-artist, a common thief -- all the worse because he steals from those who think they're helping him and can least afford to take the loss.

I too, am a senior citizen, and the $2300 or so that this nasty piece of work stole from me is irreplaceable. I am a firm beliver in what goes around comes around, so even though I have no legal recourse against this piece of slime, I feel absolutely certain that he will suffer for what he has done.

Ramona You say the most stupid thing you did was to sign over the title on your 2001 Honda to Mr. Randazzo. I disagree. You did make mistakes; you listened to a man who brought out the crying rag and instead of telling him "no money - no car," you fell for his sob story and let him literally steal your car. But had you kept the title in your name, it could have been worse for you. Suppose Mr. Randazzo had gotten into an accident - in fact, a bad accident and people were injured? With your name on the title as the registered owner, guess who would have been held financially responsible? You could hire an agency to find Mr. Randazzo and then sue him for the money. I have just one question though. You said that other than the AC on your Honda which stopped working, your car was in good condition and that you had to buy a new car which you could ill-afford. Why didn't you just have the AC on your Honda fixed? That would have cost a lot less money than buying a new car.
