Our condominium, in North Palm Beach, FL hired Latite Roofing and Sheetmetal Company to re-roof our existing 24 unit building. A homeowner and board member insisted that Latite be used for the job. The saleman, Fred Price, was the contact within Latite.

The contract was let in May /05 in excess of $80,000 for a simple flat roof with a mansard. There was nothing complicated in our building. The work was to be completed prior to hurricane season.

The re-roof job was not started until November/05 after we had experienced Hurricane Wilma (more damage again). As a homeowner and board member I was stressed to the max with our roof not being replaced.

An A/C company called Cold Front came onto the property on November 9th to November 12th to raise the a/c stands.

Latite finally started working on the property November 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th (bad rain storm that night) and November 18th. I had a serious water leak into my bathroom - ground floor unit early November 18th am. The water was running out of my "light/fan" fixture. The water entered from the roof (several opinions from other roofing companies and general contractors was a "pitch cup" around the a/c stand was not properly sealed and the water entered thru it and ran down 3 floors).

I met with the Supervisor, Jose, from Latite on Saturday and took him into the 3rd floor unit and showed him where the water came down from the roof. 30 minutes later Jose came back to my unit and said "it will not happen again". I tried to find out how he fixed it and he would not tell me. It never leaked again.

I tried to deal with Latite directly to no avail. Fred Price, the salesman, informed me that he "had a problem with my claim and would forward it to Barbara Struve, Loss Claims Department". I never heard from Latite's "Loss Claims Department". I had to make a claim in excess of $3,000 (this did not include my time for cleaning, moving furniture or painting) on my Homeowner's insurance policy, Nationwide to repair my unit. Besides being out of my home for more than 3 weeks I also had to pay my insurance deductible. I understand now that this claim for damages is in the Legal Subrogation Department of Nationwide for possible legal action against Latite Roofing. I have no control over this claim now and I am also looking at increase insurance rates for making a claim (I have had homeowner's insurance since 1992 in Florida and never made a claim).

To date, Latite Roofing ignores all requests to assume responsibility for their actions.

I forwarded photos to Latite Roofing of the damage to my home and I also left all the damaged drywall and light fixtures on my patio for more than 3 weeks. It took me 10 days to get an adjuster in from Nationwide Insurance Company. Nobody cared or even took the time to come and see it or look at the concrete ceiling to see where the water migrated from.

I ended being out of my home for more than 3 weeks and had a terrible time finding anyone to repair my unit during the Holiday Season.

I know the roofing business is good right now, but you still need to have companies working in your homes that are competent and do supervise their employee's work and stand behind their workmanship. I know that "accidents" happen, but I also know that if you are a credible and responsible company you take care of the repairs.

I am not telling not to hire Latite Roofing and Sheetmetal Company, however, in my opinion, you need to be extremely careful in dealing with roofing company. I recommend that if you intend to deal with them for new roofs or re-roofs, that you have an attorney review the contract, get some type of start and finish date for their work.I also recommend that you hire a general contractor or roofing inspector to walk the job while it is in progress and make sure that nothing is being missed or overlooked. This extra supervision will be money well spent. I would not rely on the sole inspection of the Building Departments.

I work in the construction industry and no matter how many trades are on a job we always supervise their activities to ensure that the job is done correctly.

It has been almost 1 year since Latite Roofing and Sheetmetal Company signed a contract with our Condominium Association and the work is still not complete.

Sincerely,

Elaine

I used Latite to put a new roof on my home 5 years ago. Since then, i have referred them to family and friends. The best thing about Latite is they answer their phones, they call back and they show up!!!! I have employed them to clean my roof twice since the installation. I needed some work done to repair damage caused by a windstorm, they came and the cost was reasonable.

The BEST part of Latite is that after 40 plus years, they are still here and still in business. My husband is in construction and we have seen so many companies come and go over the years. It was a consideration when we hired them, th efact that they have been in South Florida since the 60's. I am thrilled they are sill in business.

Call then for yourself and see thie quality organization. It is so obvious they are the best in town.

p.s. anyone having work done in 2004 / 2005 / 2006 knows what a disaster the state of Florida was in after 13 hurricanes. There will always be someone who is dissatissfied.
