Complaint Review: Littermaid - Internet

In response to complaints about the lid staying open on the Littermaid I simply elevated the front of the unit by placing a 1x4 under the unit just behind the litter container and the problem is solved. I have also had the rake stop at the end of its travel and not return. I found that there are four mechanical logic switches used to control the rake's movement. Two in the front and two in the rear, one on each side. I found that the clumping litter had caked up on one of the switches causing it to stick. By tapping it lightly on the side and spraying with WD 40 I was able to free it up and the unit is back online. As another user suggested regular application of WD 40 is good preventive maintainence. On an individual note I have a cat with an overactive bladder who urinates like the proverbial race horse. The clumping litter turns to a thick clay which the rake often has trouble pushing into the litter container. I am experimenting by mixing about 40% Scoop Away crystals with the clumping litter. The theory is that the crystals will cause the litter to break into more manageable clumps as it is pushed toward the waste receptacle. I will post my results. GC

They sent me a new one for a $10. handling fee and it is far superior to the original unit that I had. It must be a new model or something. While I was pretty upset with the original unit, customer service came through quickly and the replacement unit has performed beautifully. It seems to hold more litter so the cats are happier too. After burning up two units in fourteen months, I took the second one apart and found out that urine entered the scraper bar causing rust and premature failure. After I purchased a third unit ( I am hooked as they do work excellent when working.) I sealed the four screws on the top of the scraper bar and the joints of the two halves where the scraper comes together with silicone and have been problem free for three years now. A little work ahead of time by the consumer or preferably the manufacturer would save alot of complaints. The manufacturer does want you to get hooked so you will keep buying them. I have had this item for more than 2 years now, and have had no problems at all whatsoever. I have 5 cats that actually line up to use it all day long so it gets a lot of use. I do maintain it on a regular basis though, by spraying WD40 on the moving parts every now and then. I've never had a problem with anything not functioning correctly, and the WD40 actually makes it a little quieter. Before crying sour grapes about the product, why not try some preventive maintenance? You can't expect any electronic device to perform perfectly unless you take care of it, do you?

I have had my littermaid for almost a year and it still works fine and I have two cats that use it what seems like constantly. I agree that the lid does stay up, I thought it was just me. But I still say that it's better than scooping a regular litter box every day.
