On 1/17/06 I sent in a deposit for a Great Dane Puppy in the amount of $500. The price for the puppy was $950 plus shipping from Texas. The puppy could not be shipped until 8 weeks old.

After several conversations with Ms. Rainwater. She told me that my puppy would be coming on the weekend of the first week in February. I mailed the remainder of the balance via certified funds to Ms. Rainwater in the amount of $680. I received a message on my answering machine on Wednesday, February 8th that some of the puppies had a "little diarreh" and she wouldn't be able to ship my dog that week.

I later found out through several subsequent phone calls to Ms. Rainwater over the next several days that almost half of the litter had died from Parvo Virus, a highly contagious virus that usually kills young puppies and/or weak dogs. Ms. Rainwater assured me that my puppy wasn't affected, but she was not sure when she could ship her. She estimated that it would not be for another 2-3 weeks at the very least.

I then called back that day, and she admitted to me that my puppy had indeed contracted Parvo and that she was on an IV of fluids and antibiotics. After hearing this news, I contacted my vet since I already have a geratric dog (12 years old) at home. He informed me that even if my puppy survived, it would most likely have lasting health effects from this virus, such as heart, digestive and possible nervous system problems.

During my phone conversations with her, she told me that "she would have to burn her nursery kennel to the ground." because Parvo survives in the soil for several years! I reluctantly called Ms. Rainwater on 2/9/06 and asked her if I could get my money back. She told me I would receive my money back, but I would have to wait because she was waiting on a deposit from another family for a puppy from that litter!

Ms. Rainwater was also trying to offer me other puppies from several other litters she already had. One of which was missing half a tail, I declined and told her that I would not take a replacement puppy, since her entire kennel had been exposed to Parvo.

I did not hear from her for several weeks until March 9, 2006 when she sent me a nasty letter, attacking me personnally and stating that her contract clearly states that there are "No cash refunds, only replacement dogs". She then went on in the letter to say that she would only refund my shipping charges of $230 and that was it. And that she had offered my replacement puppies which I decline. Of course I declined them, her kennel had been exposed to Parvo!!!

I cannot believe that Ms. Rainwater would treat honest people in this manner. Although her contract has that claus, this is extenuating circumstances and a highly deadly and contagious disease. To date, I have not received my money back, and have contacted several other puppy buyers who puchased puppies from this litter which received puppies that were underweight and ill when they received them. One gentlemen I spoke to stated "he had it out" with her several times over the phone and tried to get his money back as well.

This woman either needs to fess and refund money to the families that were effected by this tragedy. Ms. Rainwater is neither a reputable breeder or a decent person.

In researching Littlehorse Danes, I have discovered another report against them that sounds strikingly the same as this one.

Check out ripoff report: http://www.ripoffreport.com/r/Little-Horse-Great-Danes/Mineral-Wells-Texas-75002/Little-Horse-Great-Danes-Littlehorse-Great-Danes-Melody-Rainwater-Alexsandra-McDonald-Hea-1205484

Ask many questions before you buy a Great Dane from Littlehorse.

  • Ask if they have had parvo in their litters.
  • Ask how many pups they have lost to parvo.
  • Ask if they returned the deposit on these pups.
  • Ask how they know their next litter will not have parvo.
  • Ask if dogs that have parvo and survive are healthy.  Not usually - often have heart and other internal defects.
  • Do they have any champions with the Littlehorse name?  Any champions in the last 4 generations?
  • Ask if they show their dogs.   Ask how they know that their dogs are good representatives of the breed.
  • Ask about the temperment of their dogs.  When was the last time they walked one of their dogs or took them to a public place or took them to play with other dogs that they did not grow up around.
  • Ask if their dogs have any genetic predispositions.  Ask if any of their dogs have 3rd eyelids that show or cherry eye.  These are genetic predispositions.  Ask if they guarantee against genetic diseases.
  • Ask how the "general health" guarantee works.  Get specifics.  Is there really a guarantee - to be completely  honest.
  • Ask how often they breed their females.  Is it more than once a year?  Yes!  Against all breeders guidelines, they breed the same b***h multiple times a year.  Popo was bred late 2014 and again early 2015

Be careful.  Be willing to wait until an upstanding breeder has a puppy for you.

I used to breed Cocker Spaniels. I can say without a doubt that a puppy who survived Parvo will have bad health for the rest of it's life and that it's life will be shorten. I think that the Vet knows more than you. Where did you get your medical degree? The buyer was right in asking for a refund. The buyer has a right to receive a healthy puppy for his money. You should of sent him his refund right away without even having to ask for it. That is the difference between a good breeder and a bad one. The buyer had a 12 year old dog that probably would of died if it had of been around that puppy. You are not a good breeder.

Melody, Too bad you can't read. The original report I filed was almost two years ago!!! Although you did EVENTUALLY give me a refund, it took almost 1 year and 1 bounced check and a kind-hearted moderator who runs a reputable website for me to finally get it. It seems you have a selective memory. When I originally enquired about the reason why you cancelled the ship date of the puppy I had a deposit on, you told me the litter had come down with diarrhea and when I asked if the littler had Parvo, you replied to me "When you daughter gets diarrhea does that mean she has Parvo!!! " Later that week, you finally admitted to me that the little did have this virus. As for calling 5 times a day, when you pay $950 for a puppy and have lost a previous puppy to a fatal heart condition, just 3 weeks prior to this incident, you'd better believe I wanted to make sure this puppy would be fine and it wasn't!!! Melody, you had many other families that had deposits on this litter who lost puppies or who wanted a refund, who were very unhappy with your treatment of them. So, this wasn't an isolated incident with me. We now have a beautiful 2 1/2 year old fawn female that is happy and HEALTHY which we purchased from a wonderful breeder. Good luck to you.

This woman called me 5 times a day while I was caring for sick puppies. We do not loose half the litter and her puppy did not die. She refused to take her because she believed the drivel her vet told her. Anyone who knows anything about parvo knows that the puppies that live through it have fantastic immune systems. Last but not least she received all of her money back and I was smart enough to keep a copy of the check. We just passed a surprise inspection by the AKC and we passed with flying colors. As a matter of fact the last words out of the gentleman's mouth were "WOW". Beware breeders of selling a puppy to a malcontent such as this one. BTW, this happened over two years ago.
