In Dec 2016 I took my car to Lopez Auto for an assessment as to what needed to be repaired. I had just spent $750 with this mechanic the previous week. I asked him to assess what needed to be fixed and let me know. Two days later he had not called so I called him and he stated that it needed two hoses for $590 and said he had ordered the hoses and was getting ready to put them on. I clearly told him not to do the repairs and return the hoses as I was skeptical and wanted to get a second opinion. He stated he would not be able to return the hoses and that I needed to pay him for them. I told him no and that I would let him know when I would be there with a tow truck to get the car. I called a couple of days later but he had gone to Mecico on vacation for the holidays and his son David would not release the car to me. He said his dad would be back in January. In the beginning of January I called again and the son said the same thing. Shortly after that I was sent a certified letter that I owed over $3000 in storage fees. I called and spoke to david senior who said he had put a lein against my car. I contacted the lien company and followed their instructions to disputed the lien with the DMV.

At this point I just wanted the car back so I stated I would pay for the hoses and take the car but the mechanic said he had already installed the hoses in order to move the car however the car had been moved from the front parking lot into the garage without the new hoses so his statement that he had to fix it was a lie. Either way I offered to pay again and planned to take him to small claims court for unauthorized repairs but he refused my payment and said we were going to court for the storage fees which are now $4500. This man has basically stolen my car and is has been attempting to extort me for $4500. We have been to small claims court but the judge was not familiar with mechanics law so we will be notified by mail of the result. He did almost the same thing to my brother who took a car in for a new ignition for $300 but the mechanic installed 2 belts as well and then tried to charge $650. Fortunately my brother was able to talk to the son in the fathers absense who took the belts off the bill and said his father does this all the time. The son has since left the company. This man is a criminal and basically a car thief do not take your vehicle to him. I've notified the BBB and am going to the police department to file a report of car theft and extortion .
