Macklen Roofing, Inc Melton Jerrett Macklen Home repair fraud Myrtle Beach South Carolina
I signed an agreement with Jerrett Macklen owner of Macklen Roofing on June 6, 2017 to install a "new" metal roof and "build" a slope pitch roof over flat roof and install metal. The price quoted was $7,900.00. It took them 3 days to complete the job because they only worked a few hours a day. I asked why and was told they were sleeping in.
I called my insurance agent to tell him I had added a new roof since my insurance declaration page showed my roof was 32 years old. I emailed him the invoice and he asked for a breakdown between labor cost and material cost. I asked the contractor for that and have not received it as of this date.
After the roof was inspected by the adjuster I was informed that my roof did not meet code and a building permit was required. I was also told that if I tried to sell my house with this problem I could be held liable for his mistakes.
I text Mr. Macklen and told him exactly what the adjuster said. He became beligerent and talked very unprofessional to me. I told him I'd call Code Enforcement and have them inspect it. He then stated he would come and fix the problem but wanted to charge me anopther $1500.00. I called an attorney friend of mine and he said absolutely not. After a few more days of haggling with the builder he agreed to come out the next day and do the repairs. He also patched the new metal roof in two places which I want changed out.
After two weeks of waiting and broken promises I called Code Enforcement. The adjuster was right and the builder is being cited. Code Enforcement is trying to get the builder to come and make the repairs and replace the two patched areas.
I plan to pursue this builder with LLR, BBB, SC Dept of Consumer Affairs. I also intend to report this to SC Dept of Aging since I am an older woman he thought he could take advantage of me. He did put in a text that he knew he should have gotten a permit therefore I am filing charges against him for Home Repair Fraud.
I paid for a new roof and received substabdard work. He patched my new roof in two spots, violated SC code and has spoken to me in a very unprofessional manner. Told me I ws a know it all. I have since found out that he was arrested for domestic abuse second degree but somehow got out of that. He did brag to me that he knew people in code and he'd been doing roofing for 22 years.
Avoid the company at all costs. I am sorely dissappointed in this man and his conduct.
