Majic Jack installs its program in separate position on the hard drive--and actually can even give it a drive letter of its own--I found that if you are one of those people that shuts down your computer often --on bootup-- Majic Jack has to reinstall itself and verify connections--which may take 10 seconds. If you pounce on the Majic Jack Icon prematurely and select it to make it come alive it appears if you are trying to run 2 separate instances at the same time--some computers go to sleep--others "freeze". When I was impatient and things stalled I resorted to cntrl alt del keys to get to task mgr and end the majic jack process--when things returned to normal I then clicked on majic jack icon and clicked "upgrade now" Everything goes back to normal. Be paient--or like me --leave the computer on--requires little power--and is much easier on the circuits--they dont have to deal with 50 degree temps changes several times a day.

The first weeks I had it it did have audio problems intermittenly--I upgraded majic jack and that did not work---a real person online from Majic jack walked me through how to test the unit and gave me a website to download (for free) more suitable audio codecs for my computer. 2 minutes and the fix has been permanent. I have had many more problems with audio related programs such as "Realplayer" and "Quicktime" than I ever did with Majic Jack. If you cant "fix" it in less than a week--send it back--no money lost. I, as you, assumes the problem is the unit--more often than not it is the computer configuration when installing new software.
