Marcus Evans IP Law Summit pressure sale backed by false urgency Internet, California
I recieved a phone call, similarly described in Ripoffreport.com by a former Marcu Evans summit employee.
My call went something like this:
Hi, my name is __________ with the Intellectual Property Legal group of Macus Evans. I'm working with a group of VPs and Chief IP litigation and prosecution counsel. Many are interested in hiring new outside IP Counsel. These companies are midsize and large. For example, fortune 500 name dropping and IP Legal counsel name dropping galore.
And the reason why I'm calling you SPECIFICALLY* today is because our group is interested in a company that does WHAT YOU GUYS DO*.
... We work very closely with these executives to identify specific intellectual property needs they may have over the next year. We are very careful in selecting who we work with. They tell us all their needs and are the people who make the decisions for hiring outside counsel. Once collect their information and needs we provide the information to you. You also provide us information about your expertise and we provide your information to the companies. We set up a big IP Summit meeting so that in-house IP counsel and outside IP attorneys can get CLE credit and meet via computer created mutually selected one-on-one meetings.
The cost is $35,000.....(but the price kept droping over a period of weeks).
You are guaranteed 10-15 meetings with Corporate decision makers who are definately looking for additional outside counsel.
We only work with a select group of solution providers like you. The ONLY reason why I'm contacting you today is because we are aware of your excellent reputation in the IP arena and we have a few openings left.
Long story short: The Corporate counsel were also scammed to show up at the Summit. The went for free or for a very discounted price if they agreed to interview 6 to 8 legal venders. Most did not have any need for additional counsel. The in-house attorneys just wanted their CLE credit and a resort to visit.
Yes, you will meet many of the high-up IP counsel and perhaps decision makers from well known corporations. No, they were not carefully screened, nor did they work with anyone from Marcus Evans to determine if they really had any need for additional or new outside patent counsel for litigation, prosecution or contract work. I would bet that not a single IP attorney got a good solid lead toward new work. If anything is to be gained, it will occur in months and months of lead follow up, which most attorneys do anyway regardless of the CLE or IP convention they go to.
Any additional impromptu meeting that are provided are merely introductions with no substance. You are on your own baby. There is very little value added by Marcus Evans.
Don't do this. Don't get ripped off! It is hugely expensive and does not provide the returns promised. This is a too good to be true IP Summit meeting. Use your marketing, CLE or conference money elsewere.

Yes, Marcus Evans contacted me as well. I heard this script for 45 minutes the first day; he scheduled a follow up with his superior for the next day. 1.5 hour discussion the next day. When they asked for another call, I asked what more could we possibly discuss?
The pitch was that they were screening my firm to determine if we were worthy and would be selected above other competing firms in Texas (manipulative). They then mentioned a Plaintiffs' firm they were considering, who would have no interest in meeting GCs from corporations. Suspicious, I went to the ME website, where they have a video of attendee interviews, praising the conference. I recognized two lawyers being interviewed, contacted them, and they warned me off. Although they had attended two conferences at $47k each, one had received work from two clients he met there, but felt they were just throwing him a bone, and had no other work in his state. The fees did not cover the conference fee. The other received no benefit at all.
I emailed ME to cancel the third interview. They called, stating they were really relieved I had canceled, because my firm had not been chosen, and it would have been awkward. They proceeded to ask why I had withdrawn, and for the names of the attendees who warned me off. They then blamed the attendees for not getting any work, since they obviously were not attractive candidates. I then hung up.

Yes this absolutely IS the script pitch that all Marcus Evans are told they must read from on every call. Even senior sales reps do not graduate much from a bottom-feeder lower level empty-headed scammer puppet. The only issue I have with you poster is that I wish that you would be fully honest about how you know the script so well. You must be an ex-employee, and not a lawyer who received a cold call from a Marcus Evans sales rep. You must have had the script in your hand. You know it so perfectly. Unless maybe a rep emailed it to you. Sorry to argue with someone on the same side of this battle. I just think in the end it is better that we ask for the whole truth from our fellow whistleblowers and perfect your argument even more. But I'm still on your side. Im for honestly, and against lying to clients in business. Its not 1992 anymore -- companies cant get away with lying to their paying clients any longer, not with all the scams in the news and the transparency that modern companies are asking for in 2010. Keep fighting the good fight. We are doing our part to keep this company's revenue as low as possible and forcing them to restructure as soon as possible again.
