I responded to a Sunday edition of the newspaper (The Saint Petersburg Times) in the Parade Magazine for "lucky numbers" to play Lotto. I generally don't fall for this kind of stuff, but I did fill out the questionaire. About two weeks later I got a very long letter from "Maria Duval," who claimed to know all about me and my "bad luck." She was wrong from the get-go. She said I was not married. I am. She said I suffered from financial problems. I don't. But what she really wanted was money to help "guide" me in a time of crisis.

I didn't send money. Even after she didn't get money from me, she sent more very long letters detailing why I should take her advice, for a price. I ignored them. Then I received nothing from her.

Well, this week (8/16//04) and (8/20/04), I received two more letters from Maria Duval. The first was about some ridiculous good luck statue, Lakshmi, that she in no way would sell me, but that she would "entrust" to me for a post-dated check for about thirty some dollars that she would not cash for thirty days. Then I got another letter that was designed to alarm me: I am in for BAD LUCK. However, for $34.00, my "BAD LUCK" would be averted if I allowed my dear friend, Maria Duval, to channel her medium gifts to a higher power. Then, I would have happiness, money, friends and peace of mind. She was very insistent.

Well, I have to tell you that I wasn't in the slightest drawn in to such nonsense. But I know that probably many people are. I am more amused than conned because she hasn't received a penny from me. But this last letter contained a sort of veiled threat. I quote: "As you can see Melinda, I'm doing everything I can to help you. If, however, you refuse my friendly assistance, I will have to put your name in the NO FOLLOW-UP file." How many desperate, ignorant people would respond to that? With a check, that's what.

So that's my take on Maria Duval.

Why the need to be so rude?

I just wanted to say to Melinda...I thought it was kind of rude your response to Larry. By the way his comment sounds, he is on YOUR side, and agreeing with you that this Maria Duval is a scammer. All he was saying is that "hey, your right. Obviously if she was a good psychic, then obviously she would know better then to send you letters over and over again, especially knowing "psychicly" that you were not interested in sending her money, correct?" So his point is, I think, that obviously Maria Duval is a fraud and not to fall for it. So, I don't understand why you would reply by calling him a fool. I just found that to be pretty rude and figured I would respond. I also found it rude when you clearly stated above that your happily married and have no financial problems, so in other words life is treating you pretty good, yet, you go ahead and call anyone who would fall for Maria Duval ignorant and desperate. Guess what? There are people out there who really are desperate. Life may not be treating them as well and they are seeking answers or guidance...whatever you want to call it. I don't think this makes them ignorant, nor do I think it makes them stupid or foolish. When all you have is constant "bad luck" your going to turn to anything or anyone to help out of desperation. My only advice to them would be to do your homework first and find out about this psychic before sending any money. Sorry that everyone in the world is not as "fortunate" or as "smart" as you are. I think that if anyone is "ignorant" in this total scenario...I think it is you because of your s****.. I commend you for putting up a report about this person to make others aware. I just think there were things that did not need to be said and comments that were very rude. I am not trying to attack you. Just making a point and expressing my opinion. Have a good day.
