Shirley, I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience with this dealer. Too often, the salesman only has dollar signs in their eyes, and they are deaf when it comes to actually listening to the buyer. If you make it clear that you have shaky credit and are on a very limited budget, then it is reprehensible for a dealer to try to put you into a 1 or 2 year old vehicle that you can't afford. My advice for the future would be to simply get up and walk out (you can be polite, simply say "thanks but no thanks") and leave if you feel uncomfortable with a car dealer. If you ask for a specific model year or price range and they seem to be totally ignoring your wishes...then simply leave. The cards are in your hand, not the dealers. However...knowing that you are looking for a mid 90's vehicle, you might be better off buying from a private party sale in the local newspaper. Most dealers shy away from anything more than about 3-4 model years old, and you'll get a better deal by dealing with a private seller anyway. Have a fixed amount in mind that you can afford to spend, go to your local bank or credit union to get pre-approved for that amount, and then you can relax and take your time shopping the local classifieds. Once you find a nice vehicle that you like, you'll be ready to go. I wish you luck; and I hope you don't run into anymore knucklehead dealers like the first one.
