I've had my credit card since 1999, and the account was owned by another company when I signed up. Bankcard Services, or MBNA is the company that I have sent payments to for the majority of the past 4 years. Never once did one of my payments "disappear" in the mail until I closed my account in March, and asked for the exact amount owed on the account. On that day, I spoke with three different representatives at MBNA, each giving me a different balance amount. The last guy I spoke to ASSURED me he had the right total and that if I sent it that day, I'd have a zero balance on the account and it would be closed.

I sent the check, along with all my other bills (still have the carbon). Got a statement today saying they never received my check, and were charging me a $25. late fee (and mark on my credit report for late payment).

I called and spoke to several people there who basically told me I didn't have a case. I asked to speak to a manager and they wouldn't put me through to one. I've had difficulty closing accounts before so I know this game well. I would love to know how many people have sent in final payments to close their account, only to find their "check got lost" and now they owe a late fee.

My guess is thousands! What a scam. Because its happened before to me, I'm thinking this must be a huge problem, and that credit card companies are making BANK!! What do we do???
